Hey i was wondering. if i have my mac on and ichat is open and then i close it (sleep mode) will it automatically close ichat or is that becuase some other optino like auto-login is on. By close ichat i mean will it disconnect me from being on.... and if so how do i fix this without compromising having my computer on 24/7 (wasting battery/running parts 24/7)

When you close your laptop it puts it to sleep meaning that the hard drives stop spinning and everything is stored to memory until you open it back up. This will disconnect you from any chat program you have going or anything that uses the internet as well as stop all applications that are currently running. There is no way to stop that from happening.

then besides putting ym compouter in sleep mode is there a good way to shutdown everything wheni 'mg one... but have it on.. like maybe an option that will when idel shutdown everything useless like lcd backlight etc...? or does that hapen when it's idle i would just have to turn sleep mode off?

i'm assuming you have a mac laptop. you can't disable sleep mode on it normally, but there is a program called SleepLess that you may want to check out that'll force it to not sleep.

well i can tell on my mac (yes a laptop) to not go to sleep but theni 'm afraid liek.. it being a laptop and it generating heat that it'll fry a lot sooner than it would normally if i just sleeped it when i wasn't using it (during classes/sleeping)

As soon as the AIM server notices you're not sending or recieving any packets, it will log you off.

Any internet program, when unable to determine whether you're still connected, will disconnect you.

There's no way to keep AIM on, while not using battery, it's as simple as that.

Yes, I'm sure that your laptop will die faster when closed and not sleeping, but probably not that much (so long as it's WELL ventilated... keeping it in a backpack or something will ruin it).

Additionally, there's no way to "close all the programs" and stay idle as that would still use a lot of battery. The board and chips need to stay on somehow.
