Aight so i did it, finally took the plunge loaded in Slackware 10.1 configured all the kernel modules to my liking and finally got my logitech usb headset to work. All the difficult work and everything works on that end except for one small evil problem, my screen wont resize above 1024 :( . I am well versed in the xorg file so i just thought i would have to go into the bit depth section i was using which was 24, then input the new value of 1152x864 or whatever it was for the size. Still though i cant resize above 1024 :( Can anybody think of what could be going wrong
P.S Slackware Rocks (aside from the resizing of the resolution)

mind posting the relevant section of your xorg.conf? I assume you have an nvidia card?

Code:
# If your card can handle it, a higher default color depth (like 24 or 32)
# is highly recommended.

# DefaultDepth 8
# DefaultDepth 16
   DefaultDepth 24
# DefaultDepth 32

# "1024x768" is also a conservative usable default resolution. If you
# have a better monitor, feel free to try resolutions such as
# "1152x864", "1280x1024", "1600x1200", and "1800x1400" (or whatever your
# card/monitor can produce)

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

EndSection
Yes it is an nvidia did try to setup my 9600pro but gave up cause the agp thing was a bunch of junk

Noone. ahh well just was hoping for an answer cause 1024 is such a junk resolution

im just figuring this out myself, but since the highest resolution listed in your xorg.conf file for 32bit is 1152x864, it wont let you resize above that.

you should just be able to add whatever resolution you would like to use in the line for 32bit color depth, or for 16bit if you are using that.

**example**

Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "add resolution here" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

**example**

you should be able to change any of the lines like that.

It might be that it doesn't think your monitor can handle it. What does the log files say?

You can try all-out autodetection, too. Works for me, but this is an LCD that ends up doing it's native resolution. You might not want to use whatever is selected for your monitor; if so, I suggest trying autodetection on the monitor but a normal "Display"-subsection.

If that's what you've already got, you'll have to hope there's something useful in the logs.

Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "1152x864" (no mode of this name)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using default mode "1152x768" (width too large for virtual size)
Alot in the log file, well guess this maybe the problem. Dont know why this would happen i can do 1280 even though im on a 15in monitor, dang you slackware or xorg whichever one it is. Well if anybody knows how i could fix this problem please do post.

yeah, look through your log file and see if there is anything there. Otherwise provide a link maybe?

Can your monitor do more than 1152x864?

If it can, I would try 1280x1024 instead of 1154.

Try adding "Virtual 152 864" (sans quotes) underneath the Modes line. Sounds odd, but worth a try.

I'm going through about the same thing, but a different resolution. You would think there would be a way to force what you want.

Besides, the "virtual" sucks, since what I get is a 1024x768 desktop, with a 800x600 window to look at it through.

its in the kernel make file, cause when i recompiled my 2.6.12.4 or w/e the current one is i stumbled upon some rez deal. It might under the video section or something. Anyways, rather then fight that i did what linux was designed for which is screwing or something not working cant the user doesnt know whats going on. Then just reformatting and reinstalling while still trying to save important data like D3 Roe saved game files. Other then that i just acuired a FC4 dvd so im rocking that except i cant get the src file for the kernel so i cant install my nvidia drivers, but anyways i will doom myself when i get my 9600pro on weds. That was probly a bad choice cause now rather then having bad rez i will have no rez, think i will stick with ubuntu it has the sources on apt for fglrx.

The kernel config files only effect either your mouse res (for antequated mice or joysticks). xorg.conf handles everything for X. If your monitor supports 1280x1024 there's zero reason not to be using it. I agree, 1024 does suck, even with Fluxbox. Just not enough room to do anything.
