well, i've had a milion distros of linux on this pc is the past year, one of them was not slackware, though.... slack was my first linux distro that i actually used.... yes, though i am still a newbie, i know a little bit about linux, and it came from slackware.


i am interested in trying slack again, mainly just because im kinda tired of the other ones being extremely bloated and such...too many options can be a bad thing to a somewhat new user.

i have a couple questions:

1)is it difficut to install the 2.6 kernel during installation of the system? how is it accompished?
2)does slackware support smp out of the box, or would i need to recompile kernel? is this difficult?
3)if i need to recompile the kernel, would i need to recompile the modules, too or would the same modules be inserted at run-time into the new kernel just like the old one?
4)does slack installer recognize other OS's and configure the bootloader as such?
5)is software raid difficult under slack?

whatchya all think?
 
1. I haven't used the most recent version, which might support doing it at install, but previously it didn't have that option, I think it has been added though.

3. Yes, you would need to probably, as adding SMP support might change things enough, and its better to the safe then sorry. Also I would suggest grabbing the newest stable version from kernel.org

i'll provide answers too ...

1. i haven't installed slack 10.2, but it wasn't an option in the 10.1 installer. i think 2.4 is still the default and/or only option during the actual install, with 2.6 included in the /testing directory.
2. i believe a recompile will be required for smp support.
3. if you recompile the kernel, using the exact same version and such, i think you can get away with not recompiling the modules.
4. the installer back with slack 8.0 auto-configured lilo nicely to boot windows. i haven't had a reason to try since then.
5. i don't see why this would be any more difficult than any other linux distribution, other than the fact you won't get a pretty gui like you might for fedora or something else pretty. :) honestly, the only place i've tried this is in rhel by kickstart which makes it really easy. this write-up (http://slacksite.com/slackware/raid.html) looks much more complicated. :(
 
I have only tried slack 10.1 which came with the 2.4 kernel and I had to compile the 2.6 which ended up crashing and going all nasty. Slackware was just not for me but is a nice distro. Not sure what changes were made for 10.2 but don't use Gnome.
 
well, i got impatient with slack last night and put FC4 on... if i had another computer, i would have gladly taken the time to learn and get things right, but i need a computer to do programming assignments.

..maybe someday when i'm bored i'll try slack again. thanks!
 
I am trying to stick with learning Debian and not go back to FC4. The problem is FC4 is just such a great package and it works great right on the fly. Good luck with whatever you decide.
