Asus P4S800D motherboard. Temp starts at 60C and goes up. P4 2.26 runs at 36C on same board with same heatsink and fans. Should I be worried?

That's too hot. The thermal spec is 69C. Maybe you put too much thermal paste on. Try re-applying. Is the heatsink fan running?

Mine (sig rig) starts at high 30s and loads at low 50s. Of course that's with a Scythe Ninja plus a 120mm cooling it. But before I had the scythe, I had a dinky copper heatsink. That would start at mid 40s and load in the low 60s. Try arctic silver 5.

Fan is running and have tried several pastes. Could the chip be bad?

Probably not, maybe the heatsink is not laying flat on the chip. What kind of heatsink is it?
