I'm wondering how Skype IN + OUT would compare to a VOIP phone like Vonage where your phone is likely to go down if your internet goes down anyway. It seems that skype in/out would be a cheaper solution so I'm wondering if anyone has completely gone with skype all the way?

Main article: Skype Protocol

The main difference between Skype and VoIP clients is that Skype operates on a peer-to-peer model, rather than the more traditional server-client model. The Skype user directory is entirely decentralized and distributed among the nodes in the network, which means the network can scale very easily to large sizes (currently about 240 million users)[23] without a complex and costly centralized infrastructure.

no internet, no skype. All Skype in + out means is that you can make calls to land line phones, and receive calls from landline phones (pots).

I mean I know skype is over the net... I have skyp out now.

I don't see any really recent entries, but it appears that Skype has no e911 services. Something to consider. Other than that Skype should be pretty much = to any VoIP.

So you can save $ by using Skype, but you'd better have a cell laying around in case you need to contact any emergency services.
