Hey, I want to make a website to help my web design, photoshop etc. etc. ..... any ideas on making one. I was thinking star wars but i'm not sure.....

Make a website about how to make a good, graphical website. :D The best way to practice something is to teach it... ;)

The thing about Star Wars, or any kind of "fan" site for that matter, is that you are limited in what you can use legally without running the risk of getting into hot water over copyright infringement.

Got hobbies? Collect anything? Personal sites like "this is me, this is my dog, this is my comp, this is my car" won't attract many visitors other than a few friends and relatives. But if you find a niche, people will seek it out.

Or offer to do sites for others that don't have an online presence, like maybe aunt Martha's bridge club or your little brother's scout troop or such. Sites like that will have a built-in audience. :)

What type of things would go over a copyright infringement (an example) and i kinda want a medium audience... :-/ just me not for like "fame and fortune" but just so i can get feedback on my site and i don't have an interesting site nor a camera to upload stuff about myself so that's why i was thinking do it on something like that.... i was thinking a review site but i don't have much to review and people pritty much bashed that on another forum becuase of like stuff i didn't think about.... i could teach html and stuff maybe start a computer thing but tha'ts broad and widly done.... :-/ i'll have to think hard... lol

i could do a place were like people can input there own stuff like a site were peopole can put up there own poems/stories type thing with section with a few comp tutorials and like stuff like that like a mix idk... :-/ thoughts? lol

It's incredibly hard to come up with a website if there is no "real world" presence looking at it. Lethal's advice is very solid: ask around if some group needs a web presence. It's the best way to get hits/feedback on a site becaues you'll be making it for them.

Just trying to make something cool and original out of the blue is difficult. Google anything you think up and you'll find there are numerous sites that already do it. (i.e. your poems example: www.enterthemuse.com).

Best piece of advice I can think of: start small, market small. You're not going to get Yahoo-like hits the first release of your site.

Go with lethal. If you want to work on something try doing some charity work. Get with small local school/church/club... and see if anyone is looking to have a site made up. Not only do you get to practice building something, but working with someone will help you understand how clients think and constantly give you instant feedback on the things you do.

Basically, anything that you did not create yourself or that is not in the public domain is copyrighted material. Just because you "found it on the web" does not mean you can take it and use it.

Say you want to make a fan site about Britney Spears. Unless Britney's a close personal friend of yours who lets you take exclusive pictures of her, every image of Britney you're going to find is "owned" by someone else, whether the photographer, her record company, etc.

Granted, some artists don't care and actually encourage fan sites. But "borrowing" those exclusive pics that a tabloid paid papparazi huge bucks for could have the tabloid's lawyers breathing down your throat. Disney is known to be quite aggressive in defending its copyrights/trademarks, going so far as to get little kids' completely personal sites shut down for using images of Mickey Mouse.

Oh, and another possibility is making a site for a local band. I've seen some very creative sites for unsigned bands. :)

See the thing is i'm not very good at web design and haven't done it often but i know the basics that's why i wanted to do something i could do by mysel;f work on it and when its' better offer to help people or something ya know.... before i offer then there not happy becuase i take too long or blah blah ...
