my sister is quite smart, and knows alot about computers. i do to, though most of it is on the hardware end, which is somthing she knows nothing about. so, she wants to run a x86 linux box as aposed to the ppc she is running now, and she offerd to buy my old computer off of me(rig 2). i said no, but i would be willing to build her a new computer if she wanted. this might not go through, but shes paying me 25 bucks for it. i already have a video card for her(my old 9500 pro) which im going to put a vga silencer rev. 3 that i have laying around the house, on it. i also have 2 fans(80mm), a fan controler(she wants a quiet system) and a psu(an aspire 420 wat that came w/ the computer, when it dies[and i bet it will] ill get her a cheep antec or somthing). shes not overclocking, or doing anything other than word processing and surfing the web, but i might get her to fold for me. anywhay, hows this look?

Your link doesn't work. Try emailing yourself the wishlist, there will be a link like "send to a friend" or something, send it to yourself and post it here.

Just a few questions about your sister, how old is she? Is she hot? :D

Wow! Great price munching setup! I'm a bit challenged that I haven't managed to get a complete system down to that low a price.

Looks like a decent setup. The only thing I can really recommend is getting more RAM. You can get a 256MB stick of 2700 for $45. Running on only 128MB of RAM can be a pain, and restrictive of what you can do.

for linux... i'd stick her with some ddr 2700 and bring her proc up to a 333mhz fsb one like the 2800 or 3000... more cost but she'll see increase huge increse in linux performance.

more ram would be a good idea but not totally necessary because linux runs primarily off a swap file for what windows users would consider ram work.

Ahem, for Linux, you want Nvidia. That ATI card might never even work in 3D mode. The nix ATI drivers just absolutely SUCK. The Nvidia drivers are much better and are updated almost as much as the Windows drivers. :)

my sister prefurs ati for lin work, as she is not useing the officail drivers. she infact hates nvidia b/c they dont alow others to make drivers for them. anywhay, she doesnt realy want a higher speed proc, as all she is doing is useing it for word processing and some web serfing. she is going to use a new duelie g5(im trying to convince her to let me build an x86 lin box for her) for all here real work, so she wants to keep the price as low as posible.

i would get an nf7-m and a mobile 2400 or something. cuts out the need for video card that way. yo could also get a retail 2500 and do the 200fsb dance and get it up to 3200+ very easily and have a heatsink in with it

as i said, my sister does
A: not like nvidia video cards(b/c they dont have 3rd party lin drivers, and i already have a 9500 pro and a vga silencer to throw on it)
B: not overclock
C: not need alot of power, and wants a quiet system. if it were for me i would go w/ a better case/ram/proc/mobo for overclocking but that would add about 100-200 dollers to the price
