My little sister has wanted a laptop for the last 4 years now and my parents are finally caving in and getting one for her, she has saved about 300$ and they are going to pay the rest. I'm looking at getting a dell vostro 1500 for her for $800. Does anyone know of anything better near that price range? 2 gigs of ram and a core 2 duo with a 128mb 8400 gm sounds pretty good to me, she doesn't need it for anything intense but I figure that will last her a decade at least.

firstly, unless she plays games, drop the vid card to the integrated, and put it somewhere else like cpu.,. im personally looking at the vostros myself due to their rugged build.. but im looking at the 1700s.. more pricey but.. a lot more laptop.. and a full keypad..

If shes going to be using it for a long time, you want to drop money into the areas that arent easily upgraded, cpu, the integrated stuff etc.. but dont waste where YOU would like parts to be and what she would use.. theyre going to be 2 different things.

Here's my Vostro build...
15.4" WXGA TL
1.46GHz C2D
4GB RAM (newegg)
128mb 8400gs
160GB HDD
DVDRW
Wireless G
6-Cell Batts

$790 including tax

is mobility a concern? Seems like these vostros are beasts.

I'd stick with the video as I'm not a fan of integrated. Considering you can't upgrade that down the road go for it.

As far as the notebook goes consider a wide screen 14 inch if she is going to carry it around with her. A smaller laptop will help in this area.
