Siri Trying To Prevent Suicides?

A big deal was made that it didn't respond appropriately last year in the psych community. They are simply doing what customers wanted.

http://psychcentral.com/blog/archiv...siri-still-flawed-when-talking-about-suicide/

And it's been improving over the year. it went from not giving a response, to giving you directions to the nearest psychiatric hospital, to giving the number and now asking if you want it to call.

Siri: I have located some bridges and tall buildings nearby to jump off from.
I have also found some tips on suicide using Razors, Carbon Monoxide and plastic bags.
There are even videos of people committing suicide that I have found for you.

Just imagine the civil lawsuits they'd face if it gave suggestions or statistics. "Most people try sleeping pills but this only results in a 10% chance of success. Self inflicted gunshot wounds end in death 99.5% of the time"

"You look fat" to an anorectic...

"Doesn't that chair seem awfully tall to you?" to someone with acrophobia...

"Would you be interested in a set of new Japanese kitchen knives?" to a cutter...

That is just silly... any decent cutter worth their weight in scares knows razors are the only tool a pro uses.

Razors are so old skool. The last thing I'd wanna do when I'm trying to slice open my wrist is accidentally cut my hand and have to get a tetanus shot because it was all rusty and junk. That'd be lame to the extreme. :(

"I work at Foxconn and I hate it here. I want to kill myself"

Siri: "Get back to work."

What if I'm thinking about killing my phone the Nth time it tells me it can't find music that's on the phone, spelled exactly the way it is saying it can't find?

In this thread, we learn that suicide is hilarious and that any attempt to help prevent it is offensive to our delicate sensibilities.

Who needs zombies when 20 something hipster douchebags are trying to do the dirty work for them and shamble their way through life looking for an out so their phones can tell them it's all okay. Yeah, the end is nigh.

Because if you were really going to do it you would not be telling your phone.

You never know. It's just like how people with late stage Alzheimers can sometimes briefly seem appear to be normal. A moment of clarity can happen at any time.

Because if you were really going to do it you would not be telling your phone.

Before people kill themselves, most people, in one way or another, usually reach out in various ways for help. Most don't want to do it, but they feel like they have no other choice and the pain is too great to go through or it'll never end. The younger age groups are at the highest risk of suicide, their also the ones that are glued to their phones... It only makes sense to add this feature in. Even if it only helps 1 person, it was worth the engineering time to do.

I think it is terrible that people would want to prevent people from killing themselves because I suffer from some sort of idiotic sense of superiority and I like to pretend I don't care about other people because people might think I'm less of a man.

honestly if i don't know some one personaly i could care less what happens to then. And i am a firm believer in natural selection,

but hey if apple wants to save some emo morons then go ahead, good for them.

I don't know. I actually like people, in general.

As do i, in general. and if i was ever confronted with some one about to off themselves i would attempt to dissuade them, because its the decent thing to do. but i wouldn't be all broken up about it if i did.

Steve, do you automatically dismiss anything Apple does as worthless? Why the ?

If this feature were on Android this place would be singing their praises.

Also, Android users are the new iPhone users of 2008-2009.

Google does have a similar feature in Google Search (search "suicide"). No one appears to have a problem with that, oddly, but not unsurprisingly.

If I was stuck using a iPhone, with its tiny screen, and Siri, I'd be suicidal too. :)

Hmmm ... never thought of this. If you say anything pertaining to suicide, murder, etc. into your smartphone, your phone number and personal identifying information about you is probably going into some database ... (Hmmmm)

I mean, this wouldn't be hard to do. I do alot of automation at work. Certain words get flagged, dump the phones PII info into a database and BOOM, you're on the no-fly list. No human intervention needed.

Since we have already learned recently that EVERYTHING you do in iOS gets logged somewhere by someone, your search for that in Siri could earn you a psych evaluation, a loss of your right to bear arms if you ever end up in court for something else, or an employer that won't hire you because you might be unstable. Or you end up in court against the government for one thing, and next thing you know they're making a character case against you based on your search in Siri.

Yeah...

This is great.

It's followed by 'You have been reported to the NSA as potentially unstable and the local authorities will be stopping by your residence to collect any weapons that exist. Any weapons permits you may currently have are now null and void.

Moral of the story: Don't ask your phone any questions.

So tell us Steve; What would you rather Apple have it say?

Nothing? A joke? Suggestions?

If you're gonna roll your eyes at it then let us know what better idea you have. There are a lot of things to hate on Apple for but this is just childish, inane, and frankly inept on your part.

I think that this is pretty great, good for apple. First positive thing I've said about apple in EVER

Siri logs are anonymized. No personally-identifiable information is stored.
