Single vs Dual Core Situation

Im curious to what your opinions are on a subject ive been thinking about.

The setup. Operating system loaded and playing a game. Nothing more, nothing less.

Would a opteron 170 with each core clocked at 2.7 preform better than a opteron 148 clocked at 3ghz.

I assure you that this is a hypathetical situation, and there is no need to speculate against the setup.

The argument for the 148 is that its clocked higher and the game is single threaded.

The argument for the 170 is that it can devote the game to a core and the other system processes to the other.

So which do you think would preform better in this situation?

I'd say the 3ghz single cpu would be slightly (so slight you probably wouldn't notice) better. You'll probably end up forcing the game to only use one core to make it work anyways if you had a dual core cpu :)

It is going to vary from game to game, but generally speaking the 3ghz one will be faster for the game assuming you have nothing (or very little) else running in the background. However, the expierence will probably feel smoother on the dual core.

I am not sure how much is gained by the new ATi and nVidia drivers that take atvantage of Dual Core but it might be enough to let the 170 keep pace with the 148 in all games.

If the game is Quake4 or CoD2 or any newer game written to take atvantage of the dual core, then the 170 will be way way faster.
