Ok so i plan on purchasing 512MB PC3200 Corsair XMS. I will either buy a 1x 512mb stick (2 3 2 6 1t) or dual 256mb sticks with the same settings. What would be better dual channel 512mb (2x 256mb) or single channel 512mb (1x 512mb)

i would suggest the one 512mb dimm since youll eventaully put in another 512mb to upgrade. youll also most likely will be able to hit a higher fsb for overclocking with only one dimm installed.

If you're going to stick with 512 for a while (its working fine for me) go for the Dual Channel.

OVerclocking can't make up for the speed dif.

can you elaborate on that, i dont understand exactly what you mean. are you saying dual channel is noticeably more effective in performace? ive been under the impression that dual channel is overrated and is mostly marketing. any links to where i can see perfomance differences?

The marketing part is where they sell "dual channel packs", when in reality it's just two sticks.

There is a considerable difference in performace when switching from Single to Dual channel, atleast for me anyway.

If you are using an nforce board there is only a 3% difference or so between single and dual channel. If you will be buying another stick in the near future I would recommend getting 1x512 and then place another 1x512 in your system later to attain dual channel.

this is exactly what i was thinking. thank you.

Single channel. Dual channel really does not do much for AMD setups. The key is just having the FSB and mem frequency synchronized.
