single drive to raid 5, is it possible?

i have a computer which has a 250GB Seagate PATA drive. its a work computer and i want to setup a raid 1 or raid 5. can i do this without destroying the stuff on the drive?

or would it mean a windows reinstall?
 
You have to have at least 2 drives for raid 1 and 3 for raid 5. And i don't think you can install windows on a software raid 1 or 5. But you could do it on a hardware raid array if you had a controller for it.
 
i would be buying additional drives i know raid requires more then 1

currently just the onboard sucky raid controller (for raid 1)
if i was going to go raid 5 i would have to buy a controller

what controllers would this work on?
 
How much money are you willing to spend and what is your motherboard? (Does it have any PCIe slots)
 
im going to have to buy another drive anyways as the 30GB old ass Quantum Fireball (SCARY!!!) which im using as an external backup drive is no longer big enough to store 2 months of Ghost backups

currently only need to backup ~20GB drive backup on 1st of the month + daily recovery points ~500mb/day

i can store 1 month on the 30GB drive but i would like to have more then 1 month at a time backed up. im also doing monthly DVD burns for offsite backup.

is there a way to tell ghost to overwrite backup sets over a month old?
 
dont want to spend too much money. im not looking for a $3000 hardware Raid5 card or anything
 
In this case I would recommend a second drive in an external enclosure, 320GB should do.

That should last you a full year. Or, even better. Get a second 250GB drive, setup raid1, and get an external 250GB drive. Copy the backups to the external drive after backing up to the raid1 and take the external off-site daily.

Total cost? Under $200

thats pretty much what ive got planned. which brings me back to the question of is it possible to set up a raid 1 without loosing my windows install and junk

can i just "add" a mirror drive and leave the original alone?
 
just ordered the exact same drive thats in the computer
segate 7200.10 250GB PATA
gonna see if i can make it run Raid0
if not it goes in the external box and get ghosted to for the rest of its days
 
Windows will install on software raid 1, raid 0 and everything else it will not you will need a hardware solution for that.
 
Windows will only install on a mirrored dynamic volume. It will not install on a spanned, striped, or striped with parity/RAID-5 volume. MS's official position on the matter is that only one drive should be required to start the system.
