It is a budget build for someone looking specifically to play BF3 @ 1920x1080. I didn't get all the parts from newegg but was easiest to link from. Only thing left to buy is a GPU. All other items were bought on sale & with coupon codes/shocker discounts. (so a little cheaper than links currently show). There will be no overclocking. I am looking to set this up and pass it on.

Left with $270 with shipping to spend on a single GPU. I'm looking at either the HD6950 or GTX 560Ti. At the 1920x1080 resolution BC2 seemed to favor the 560 over the 6950 cards but I haven't seen any BF3 release benches yet with a rundown of the cards performance/comparisons. Basically I have a few cards in mind to see what you think or give an alternate option:

As much as I wanted to, the money wasn't there. I was originally going to have to use a Phenom II x4 955 but realized I could get the FX 4100 for $10 cheaper, so it became the obvious choice.

Consensus is definitely 2gb over the 1gb at 1080p resolution?

I hit ~1.5GB+ VRAM usage regularly in BF3 with all settings on Ultra and no deferred AA/HBAO. Add in some MSAA and you're talking even more vram usage. This is at 1920x1080 with 2x 2GB 6950's in crossfirex. It may be that the engine is dynamically scaling to use more framebuffer if it's available, but still based on this alone and the very small price difference between the two I would highly recommend getting the 2GB card.
 
I just picked up a 560ti last night that should get her in the next few days. Price/Performance was the main reason I chose nVidia over AMD. Plus, the batman code (which I already have for xbox) sells for like $30, so that's more cash back.

Actually, the 955 will trounce the 4100. The Phenom II chips are great for gaming, even at 1920 x 1080 res.

Microcenter nearby?

You can get a i5-2500K + decent gigabyte mobo for $240 + TAX
overclock to 4.3GHz and it will make that AMD setup look broke as a joke


OT: No wonder AMD is not doing well. What's with their CPU names? Phenom, Zambezi? lol, K.I.S.S.!!
 
Look, I'm just helping out a kid in college build a budget gaming pc so I dont need any BS. Just keep it on topic. I asked for a GPU not how shitty an AMD setup is. No microcenter nearby anyway. If you would have read the initial post I said "no overclocking."
 
I'm currently using a single 6950 2GB for 1080p. It works great. I've have not had any issues with it and BF3... Through rank 11 everything has been smooth as can be. Only issues I have at all are with server lag/"rubber banding"... that gets kind of annoying but it happens with almost every 64 person server.
 
All components are ordered and OP got a great deal with coupon codes etc... so suggesting anything other than a gpu at this point it pointless. Anyway, I'd suggest a 6950 dirt 3 edition currently on sale on newegg with rebate for $244.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102945&Tpk=6950 dirt 3 edition

This is also the last of my favorite 4 models that is in stock currently. Card has a dual bios switch, flip it to the right, install it, permitting your lucky with the gpu your have 1536 shaders out of the box from the factory.

My single 6950 2 gig pushes a 24" just fine. (1920X1200)
 
6950 2 gig dirt 3 edition, dont overclock and just flip the switch for the extra shaders at least..
