Alright so I DSL was hooked up in my house today. The way it's set up is the DSL modem is plugged in to my 24 port switch. Then Each computer is plugged into the switch.

My 3 desktops work fine. Set themselves up automatically.

My Dell Laptop isn't working however. It shows a 1394 Net Connection, but no "LAN connection" not sure what the deal is.

You have enough public IP addresses to hook everything directly into a switch? (Or is this an integrated modem / router?)

Anyway, sounds like the laptop needs its network drivers installed (you should at least see a disabled LAN connection in the Network Connections otherwise). Check the Dell site.

Hmm no idea actually. It's just the DSL modem that came with the service :p It's a little external box that seems like a flimsy p.o.s.

Yeah I had no idea what was up with that. I'll check the dell website.

Im willing to bet the NIC is disabled or not installed correctly. I also ran into a problem on a HP laptop that wouldn't show the freaking network connections until I actually had to change a setting in the WinXP view junk to see it.

Well, it's possible that it's got NAT capability, but there's a good chance you'll need to pick up a home router to get that many systems online together.

Mine, for instance, can do NAT, but I stuck a Linksys behind it anyway for the integrated switch and ease of administration.

alright thanks for the tip.

Most DSL providers are using small dwinky dsl/router/wireless jack of all trade boxes. That being said, many use NAT to provide IP's for multiple computers as thats the big thing nowadays, is home networking.

Then again, depending on who's providing the service and equipment, it may not.

Ok, they are right.. but i am sad martin ya just dident ask me on MSN :p i am the network God here :p
But yeah, get a decent Router and have the DSL line come into the router and the Ethernet port of the router goto your Switch, Any of problems let me know

Martin, were you setting that up to share the internet connection through your main PC? Sorta like the old network you had setup?

Either way, I agree, get a router. It makes things nicer.
