I have a question and I am absolutely astounded that I do not know the answer to this.
Currently, I have 4 SATA 250GB drives attached to my old(ish) mobo. No RAID...just 4 independent drives. The problem here is that I would like to move to a RAID and I would like to have a dedicated storage box (drives are in my HTPC now). I really liked the idea of going with a NAS box that can do RAID and would be hooked up via GbE. The question, will I notice a significant degradiation in performance on these drives? I know that typically local drives are way faster, but I had a tenant in my data center that said that the performance they get on their fiber-channel array (88TB......no joking) was FAR SUPERIOR to any local array. Now clearly, fiber is a different game, but it got me thinking if I could match (or come close) to the performance of my native drives...I could put the NAS out of the way, and have instant portability.
