Are they loud? How loud? If it's loud how can I make it quiet? (referring to the non and fully modular 450w sfx psu's)

Some people have been complaining about the noise at load with the modular 450W and have replaced it's fan (requires soldering or adapter) but it also makes the PSU overheat when it's supplied hot air.

Fan noise seems to be also an issue with the non-modular 450W.

Most are looking forward to the 600W which has a different fan and a different fan profile, which should mean it is going to be a lot quieter. And some are looking forward to the 500W SFX-L with a 120mm fan, but it doesn't fit all cases because it's a little longer (hence the 'L').

Actually, the non-modular bronze 450W also rather loud under load. It's just that those people using the bronze 450W plucked them from their SG05/06 that came with it, so there are very few of us. So you don't see many people complaining about it.
Meanwhile, I'm waiting patiently for the SFX-L which is 1500rpm at max.

Ah OK, I changed my comment. I remembered people saying it wasn't as loud but I'm not sure.

There's also the 450W V2 which addressed the fan volume level.
I have a V2.0 and it was quiet at first, then after a few months, it got a lot louder out of nowhere. I suspect a failing fan bearing. I'm also not the only one where V2.0 has not solved the noise issue, since the real problem seems to be the fan, not the fan profile that got changed with V2.0.

So, is replacing the fan not recommended? Also if heat is an issue wouldn't that make getting the nt06 pro a really bad idea? From what I've seen it pushes air into the psu.

You just have to be mindful.

As an example, a user in this subforum named OverRated has done the fan-mod on the ST45SF-G, has a i7-4770K and GTX 780Ti, has a Demciflex filter on the fan of the PSU and he uses an Ncase M1 which has a small retention in warm air exiting out of the PSU. All this is not a problem on it's own or bad design, but OverRated has had stability issues because ALL these aspects are combined.

If possible, wait for the 600W SFX PSU or the 500W SFX-L PSU (if it fits). These have lower noise as a important design point and you don't have to void your warranty and buy a fan + adapter to "fix" it. But it will also avoid another problematic aspect.

I've got one of the 450W v2 modular ones.

Zero noise complaints as I can't hear the PSU fan, only the CPU one. There's also a bit of a caveat here: the thing hardly uses any power (it's a low power HTPC, 95+% of the time it's using ~40W or less as it's idle)

here is the thing, im planning on ordering parts tomorrow. What do you suggest? http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Schwizzle/saved/y3LcCJ

My complaint with the 450W v2 is that it buzzes. 450W already more than enough for my system, but I'm considering the 600W for it's semi-passive ability (even more overkill), but I'm expecting the buzzing to still be there...

I recommend getting the Crucial VLP Sport, someone had issues with the Tactical on the ASRock motherboard getting it to work properly.

If you need/want to start building within the week, you can't wait on the 600W (due in a few weeks) or 500W (unknown at this time). Getting the Bronze is not a bad choice if you are planning on upgrading and it should be enough for your hardware (single GPU, no OC'ing ?).

Yeah, get and use short ram modules for these small builds. Saves you some aggravation.

I've had issues with the Ballistix Tactical LP on my ASUS board using one of the 2 XMP profiles.. get the cheaper VLP Sports.

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Schwizzle/saved/m2dbt6 Here is the entire planned build, with hdd and gpu salvaged until i can afford the 760, caviar blue and a proper cooler (cooler still up for debate). The other pcpartpicker link was just what I need to order to get a new system up and running.I updated the ram, where these the ones you meant?

Yep those are the ones. Mind you, you selected a single stick of 8GB. Unless you are planning to expand to 16GB, it is best to get 2x 4GB for Dual Channel.

Those are the ones. Keep an eye on Newegg's prices.. they seem to run sales on the 16GB kit almost every month or 2 (or just use their current VCO 10% off deal for either).

I always think that heat output from the CPU is the last thing to worry about, unless you're running AMD FX-9590. It's always the GPU's fault.

That's not what I mean. The hot air is expelled into the psu, won't that overheat it?

I think the hot air expelled by the CPU won't be enough to overheat the case.
I had experience using the NT06-PRO with a reference HD7870, overclocked i5-3570K in an SG06. I didn't run into any problem. I had the fan blowing into the PSU. I was using the reference GPU though. But I'd like to point that you can also flip the PSU around.
