Silverstone FT03... matx

On the graphics card side, I am leaning towards a GTX580 (had a 6970 and though very decent for th emoney, I wanted something stronger). The thing is, I know with the case design they suggest the reference cooler, but I want to make my rig as silent as possible. After all it will be on my desk 30cm from my head...and after overclocking, I don't think the stock cooler will be quiet enough... Moreover I don't plan on SLI-ing so I got all 4 slots open and I think a decent cooler even though dumping heat in my case will be ok to stay silent...

If using up 4 slots doesn't bother you, use an aftermarket cooler like a Thermalright Shaman or Arctic Cooling Xtreme Plus (AXP) on a reference GTX580 or buy a card with a pre-installed cooler based on the AXP. Both are very efficient and extremely quiet.

Are the heatpipes on the AXP not in an orientation contrary to Silverstone's recommendations?

Both the Shaman and the AXP have sub-optimal heat pipe orientation according to Silverstone. Nevertheless, there's a lot of happy owners of these coolers who see no or slight decrease in cooling efficiency compared to using these coolers horizontally. However, there has been some negative reports too. The FT02 thread here at hardforum has a number of these discussions. I think the bottom line is that in a vertical orientation, the quality of the wicks in your particular unit makes all the difference. I suggest buying from a place that allows relatively painless returns / exchanges.

Whats the best way to get some more cooling on the left (outside) 6970 in CrossFire?

I am thinking to drill about 25x 3/8" holes on the left side cover or Dremel out a square and put a plastic grill.

I think Origin did this with their Chronos.

Thanks all

I see. I went with the GTX 580 reference instead for the vapor plate which I wouldn't have to worry about, contained airflow and quieter fans (versus reference 6950/6970s).

It's gonna be tricky but I'm gonna fit that, 4 sticks of RAM, NH-D14 on a M4GZ and occupy all fan slots (including the top 120mm) except the bottom two 80mms with Noctuas and Nexuses. I want to load it out so I'll probably pick up an Optiarc, 3 terabyte+ HDDs and another GTX 580 at some point (hoping BF doesn't let me down).

Could anyone tell me what is the cooler width restriction so I can use the GPU exhaust fan?
I am gonna use a Gene-Z and 2600k, 580gtx, but because the 580 does not have a rear exhaust (probably gonna get Asus DirectCU II or Matrix) I don't want to sacrifice the 80/92mm above the gpu...

This case has supposedly the space to fit large coolers, but the reality is that if you wanna keep all the intakes/outs it becomes a nightmare to find a capable cpu cooler...
I have already given up on the cpu intake fan in favour of a strong cooler, but I don't wanna give up the gpu fan too for the above reason. I wonder if the nh-d14 fits with the gpu outfan or not...

You should really go for external exhaust on this case, there are some good overclocker cards with ee designe like the new GTX580 classified.

Anyway. just my opinion.

everybody suggests those rear exhaust card for this case, and though I aggree they fit with the cooling theme of the case, their cooling performance is very sucky.

With any serious overclocking, you will end up with huge noise from that little 80mm fan they use, so this is unacceptable to me.

If they made any triple slot card with decent heatpipe cooler and the fan mounted on the front vertically and exhausting throught the back, then I'd graldly take but not those designs they use in stock-reference coolers, they are abyssmal in noise/performance ratio...

Plus the reference cards almost never have displayport which is another no-go for me (wtf are they thinking choosing hdmi over DP on the highest end card? DP can be converted to anything, hdmi included with a simple adapter, but not the other way around...)

I have a ref 570 and it cools great. It's not a tiny fan and unlike most stock solutions it's a vapour chamber cooler that is way more efficient that most heatpipe designs.

I have a non ref GTX570 too and it's noisier and throws out a lot of heat inside the case while having a worse fan (blower fans are quieter).

Anyway, not an argument. Having had both. Reference is better in this case.

I'm sorry, I beg to disaggree. It's simple physics really....there is no way the reference cooler will cool better than a decent (<- key word) aftermarket cooler. The only thing going for it is the hot air exhaust out of the case.

For example since the GTX580 is what interests me, check these 2 pages :
http://www.guru3d.com/article/asus-gtx-580-matrix-review/7
http://www.guru3d.com/article/asus-gtx-580-matrix-review/8

Check the Load chards since it's the only ones that matter anyway, the GTX580 without a name is the reference card. You can clearly see the Asus Matrix and the MSI lightning
are a good 15c cooler than the reference card under load. Then check the next page for noise, they are also 1-2 Decibels more quiet under load (keep in mind, 3db difference equals double perceived noise). The "good" non-reference cards are clearly much better in the cooling/noise ratio, and this might not seem all that important in this stock configuration (after all, 74c max and 41db achieved by the reference cooler is good and quiet enough) but when you overclock it will make a big difference!

Currently I am thinking of getting a cpu cooler in the likes of corsair H50/antec 620 and mount it on the intake fan not the back like verybody does. This way it shouldnt interfere with the gpu exhause fan.
I am only anxious it might interfere with the RAM when using 2 fans on it for push pull, but this guys seems to have done it without problems (though he provides no pic from the side to check RAM clearance...) :

I agree, on stock clocks it will be enough... I'm not much of a gpu overclocker anymore so no idea on how it goes. I also swapped the cooler on my STX570 with a Thermalright Shaman. 30c reduction under load and no noise as far as I can tell.

If you don't have RAM already you can try getting low profile DIMMs, I had to do the same because the drive cage interfered. Went for 16gb worth of Vengeance and couldn't be happier.

Looks nice, but I would suggest rotating the TY-140 fan on the Shaman 90 degrees around the fan axis: less chance of the fan touching the case side panel this way.

The shaman is a superb cooler. It's as good as cooling/noise goes. The only thing I don't like about it is that it does not cool the VRMs very well. It has those heatsinks for them, but they also need direct airflow, and because it uses only one fan, the TY140 provides direct airflow over the ramsinks (not that important) but not over the VRMs which are a litle more to the right. Sure some air will escape on impact with the card and reach them, but it's not very ideal. That's the sole reason I's go for the Accelero extreme plus II if I went for an aftermarket cooler. (and also a little plus is that it uses 2.5 slots when shaman uses 3.5 slots)

However, there seem to be very capable coolers on high end models so pricewise it's more sensible to go for a non-reference GTX580 that already uses a decent cooler and spare you the hassle of cooling the VRMs etc even if you lose a ~10c performance under load.

My main interest is for my FT03 build to be practically silent, but without sacrificing overclocking potential. I can sacrificite the last 5% of overclocking I could get in order to remain silent, but only up to that. So for example I chose the Strider 1000W rather than the 750/850 models that would be enough for a single 580 + 2600k, just for the fact that its fan does not ramp up at all up to half load (500W).
I think I;m gonna get the Antec Kuhler 620 to mount on the intake fan like that picture above. I read reviews where it performce admirably with only 1 fan, and I am gonna buy 4 Gentle Typhoons 1850rpm use 2 on the 620 and change the other 2 silverstone fans with 2 of them. Then add a good 92mm fan for gpu exhaust and hook them all to the mobo for rpm management. This way I can be the judge of which level they remain silent to my ears (maybe ~1200rpm?) and use them all the time at that level, but stil have the option to ramp up to 1850rpm for benching or a hot day or something...

So the last piece would be the GPU cooler, and I am currently leaning towards an Asus matrix/msi lightning if I can get them in good prices, or even an Asus DitectCUII since its good enough and cheaper. All those 3 got displayport too that I need so I am good to go.

My RAM is corsair Vengeance with the big heatspreaders (I'm not a fan of them, but the LP ones didnt exist when I bought it) and I curse everyday while planning my build because thei interefere with everything all the time. I mean, even if I go for an NH-D14 or a Silver Arrow they stil interfere.
I have decided to remove the heatspreaders and keep them somewhere safe in case I need the warranty on them...it's too much hassle to try to sell them and buy the LP ones and waste even more money in the process...

I just finished my build last night.

The NH-D14 was a bit of a hassle. I have a piece of laminated paper sandwiched between the side of the cooler and the GTX 580. The fan retention clips DO touch the video card.

The NH-D14 seems to not only prevent installation of the CPU fan bracket (expected), but also prevents installation of the GPU exhaust fan (not expected) when set in push-pull-pull configuration (i.e. one more fan appended at the back of the D14).

On the plus side, temperatures are relatively cool.. doesn't really break 65'C load (2500K @ 4.5GHz), which is admirable for an SFF.

If I were to do it over again I'd have gone for the Corsair H80.

I had the same concern about VRM cooling with the Shaman and installed a Thermalright VRM G2 along with it. It does however increase the overall cost and required space inside the case.

For future reference with a ROG Maximus IV Gene-Z in this build the NH-D14 fan clips DO touch the top video card. Right now it's ghetto insulated with the laminated paper insert from my G.Skill RAM since I left the electrical tape at home. Also, the rear pull on the NH-D14 if you go for it WILL prevent installation of the GPU exhaust bracket.

I've sent an email to Noctua to secure another set of fan clips for the front NF-S12B on Friday but have yet to receive a response. I want to ditch the cable ties..

ULNA adapters on the front push and middle pull. System is as quiet as my old Shuttle SG45H7 (which only had 1 92mm in the entire system!) was except when the GTX 580 starts screaming. Consequence of this quietness is 70'C Linpack load temps and 88'C load on the 580.

Bad case, cramped really not that efficient in cooling (like how Silverstone say), and too expensive. Go with a quality case, Lian Li fanboy here =)

Here's my new build:

FT-03
AX750
Asus Z68 mATX
MSI 6870 Hawk
Kingston DDR-1333 4G x4
M4 128G
Stock Intel Cooler (I know, I know)

Just some MASSIVE headaches with cabling right now. I've had my system shut down during F!@3ing Windows Installation because the 24 pin came LOOSE on the motherboard (because of the total cramped space in that area), and another time during Windows shutdown (after Windows update) the system died because the 8 pin on the power supply side came loose. I also got a blue screen of death on startup once, I assume this was a power/hardware issue as well.

Edit: I think there's also a software power problem as well, last night my PC went to sleep and wouldn't wake.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow and maybe the good folks will help me with some hints.

It doesn't get even close to touching the panel

Anyone know the max GPU height for the FT03 off the top of their head? I know the max length is 13.7" or something like that, but I mean the distance from the motherboard to the case side panel. I'm looking to put a ROG MARS II in mine which is about 6.2" tall, and I'm a bit worried. Haven't been able to measure the FT03 yet -- it's not with me at the moment.

I have no idea how he got around the ram heat sinks. I am going to use two slim scythe 4 pin fans in a push pull configuration and it just barely clears my vengeance ram. anyway I don't have a CPU yet but the two close loop cooling systems fit inside this case.

I was really looking forward to this case... but Thankfully this forum has enough honest opinions that I will go for the much cheaper Silverstone TJ08-e it's still pretty swanky looking and seems to eliminate a lot of the issues you have with this really close to wonderful FT03.
Do you think there will be any chance the Titanium FT03 case will address some of the concerns raised here?

I am getting my parts ready to migrate from my PC-9F to this FT03 and have a few questions.

Gene-Z
GTX 580
2600K
Megahalems
Samsung 830 SSD
Corsair AX850

1. Will any slot load ODD work? (or does it have to be a certain brand for the eject button to align?)

2. I will be using a Megahalems and was wondering if it's better to have the 45 degree angle fan as the push or to take out that bracket and just put the fan straight on the Megahalems?

3. Is it better to place the rear fan on the heatsink as a "pull" fan or to attach it to the exhaust position in the case?

I am concerned about noise some, but have many fans (in pairs :)) I will try and share my subjective noise tolerance with everyone:
AP-13
AP-14
AP-15
Slipstream PWM
Arctic Cooling F12
Kama Flow 2 900rpm
Noctua NF-S12B FLX
Noctua NF-12 800rpm

2. I will be using a Megahalems and was wondering if it's better to have the 45 degree angle fan as the push or to take out that bracket and just put the fan straight on the Megahalems?

Impossible to have the bracket unless you got some thin fan on the bracket and no push fan on Megahalems.

3. Is it better to place the rear fan on the heatsink as a "pull" fan or to attach it to the exhaust position in the case?

I don't think so. I removed the bracket and used single push fan, plus the exhaust fan above.

1. Will any slot load ODD work? (or does it have to be a certain brand for the eject button to align?)

Any slot-load, slim optical drive should work. The FT03 has no eject button on the front and once the front is on, you can't use the eject button on the drive. You have to eject through your OS.

Not sure about with the Gene-z, but the NH-D14 fits fine (I'm using P8P67-M pro):

imgp0992m.jpg

I have been looking through the pictures of all the installs on this thread and was wondering if it's difficult to route the power cable like the one above?

All the other builds aren't routing the cable behind the fan, instead the power cable is in front of the fan.

I got my build going last night, but I am still waiting for the optical drive to show up.

My DVI cable is a little bit taller where the ferrite is and I think it's being folded too much. I was looking at this and wondering if it may be a better choice:

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-DVIDDMMBA6-Degree-Angled-Monitor/dp/B0035PS586

41Ly5sIjq1L.jpg

I also noticed that the cabling in the back is just hard to manage with the Corsair AX850's thick sheathed cables. Is there anything we can do short of buying that Strider power supply from Silverstone with their PP05 kit?

Is there a short 6-8in power supply cable that we can use to leave plugged into the case? It is hard to plug and unplug the normal cable when moving the case: (edit: found it)

Some of you mentioned that USB 3.0 replacement for the top panel and I am debating between that and this here:

Hello HardForum-er!

I'm about to build my first ever computer and it would be great if you guys can give me some advice on this FT-03 build. I've already did some search and read through this thread so I'm hoping I'm on a right track. This PC is for BF3 on ultra

CPU Intel i5 2500k
CPU COOLER Corsair Hydro Series™ H60 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
MB MSI Z68MA-G45
RAM Corsair Vengeance Low Profile Blue - 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (CML8GX3M2A1600C9B)
VGA MSI NGTX570-M2D12D5 x 2 SLI (Reference Type is better for this case right?)
HDD Seagate Barracuda 500GB
SSD Corsair Force Series 3 120GB SATA 3 6Gb/s
DVD-R SilverStone SOD02 Slim DVD
PSU SilverStone Strider Plus 1000W
CABLE SilverStone PP05 Short Cable Set
FAN NoiseBlocker Black Silent Fan 120mm XL2 x 4

I also have 2 specific questions..
1. Which should I go with 1000/1500/2000rpm fan? I'm thinking about 1500 right now
2. Should I stick with 1000 watt psu or scale down to 850 watt? I've never done cpu/vga overclock but would love to experience them mildly after a while :)

Thanks!

1) It depends on your cooling needs :). Hard to say some exact number, but i guess the bottom fans will have to be 8cm because the secondary GTX570 will collide with the bottom 12cm fan mount.
2) Max length for PSU is 18cm, Strider Plus is 16cm, so it should be fine.

Hoek,
What 2 closed loops do you have in there?
One for CPU and one for??? Are you going to through it on a GPU?

Just order the black one today.

Fry's has the Kuhler 920 on sale for 69.99 with rebate. Should I got with the 920 or get a H60 (Push/Pull).
Will the 920 fit in the ft03?

Motherboard: Asus Maximus IV Gene/GEN3 with a 7970.

If the 920's radiator is the same size as the one in the H70, it'll fit. I had a Corsair H70 in mine before and it fit.

Awesome build dude!

I ordered most of my parts yesterday for my FT03B:
CPU: i7-2600K
Motherboard: Asus Maximus IV GENE/GEN3
Memory: two KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1600 HyperX (16GB total) Fry's had them on sell for $22 each
CPU Cooler: KÜHLER H₂O 920
Video Card: DIAMOND AMD Radeon HD 7970 (I wanted the ASUS but it wasn't available.)
Hard Drives: I have a spare Corsair F120 and two 500GB Momentus XT with a 2.5(2) to 3.5 bracket
Power Supply: Corsair AX850 and also order the PP05 short cable kit.

I have USB 3.0 rear bracket that I'm going to take apart so I can run the USB 3.0 to some internal connectors.

Trying to find my spare Bluray / DVD burner slot drive. I did find my slim to SATA cable. May have to buy a new drive.

Any recommendation/advice on my build?
