How important is it to be able to crank out insane FPS in games when your monitor only refreshes at 75 or 80 Hz.

Does this mean there is a lot of wasted processing power generating many more images than could ever be delivered to the monitor or do they all manage to make it on there somehow?

Curious to know the answer, thanks
 
You may not be able to see, the difference, but you can usually feel the difference.

It's like playing a game at 60FPS, then playing at 90FPS, you might not see the difference, but the gameplay is usually smoother.

Edit: And no, you aren't wasting processing power, because what else are you going to do with that video processing power while you are playing a game? (Obviously you could be playing 2 games or something, but thats not the point.) You're using what your video card and processor give you.
 
I don't believe that 1Hz = 1FPS. The human eye can't detect more than what is it, 27 FPS anyways, but yes, you can definately feel the difference. Gameplay is much smoother at higher framerates, although can you tell the difference between 400 and 100? Arguably not.

The Human eye cannot be rated in FPS, that is just a myth, as the eye is constantly sending Data to the brain.

Oh, most difinately it is smoother but wouldn't that be because the computer (cpu and vid) aren't strugling to run the application?

but with Hz = cycles per second and most monitors set to update 75 or 80 times per second, is your video card really able to display 200 FPS when the monitor only updates 80 times per second?

Does the interface you use (Digital or Analog) affect the maximum amount of info that can be sent to the display?

I have to admit, my knowlege in this area seems to have a few gaps.

You know, I don't really have answers to your questions. LCDs do not "refresh" or have the entire image redrawn...it's more of a change in lighting in each pixel. I personally only use LCDs because of the eye strain and headaches I get from CRT monitors after a while. Some still don't want to call this a fact, but it is true, and the medical community agrees,

Second, I prefer the DVI input because the text does seem to be sharper, especially when it's light colored with a dark backgroun, like our forums here. This may not be true with all monitors, as I can only speak about the 2 Dells I have at home, the 1800FP and the 1503FP. My thought is if you have an LCD with DVI, and a video card to match, use it.
 
I just got done speaking to a friend in the IT department and we came up with a somewhat logical answer.

A CRT is not capable of displaying more FPS than its refresh rate. So, the vid card would only send the most current frame to the monitor when it began its refresh cycle. All other frames that are generated would be destroyed by the video card as they would not be needed.

Following that reasoning, it would make sense to cap your FPS to match your refresh rate and then use the extra processing power to render the eye-candy.

An LCD theoretically should be able to display a more constant stream of video information. However, it is certainly not unlimited. It would take far more technical knowledge than I possess to be able to find this max and what FPS this is equivalent to.

It would make sense to conclude that the CRT monitor has become a bottleneck on todays systems and to "see" a true representation of our PC's power, we would all need to have high end LCD screens.

That sounds logical... Very logical... I never thought of it that way, but then again, I dont play too many games, and when I do, I can usually play them with some eye candy, and still have great FPS :)

But then again, if you turn up they eye candy, you are going to get lower FPS, so using Vsync doesn't have all its high points... Especially with high end cards, you can usually have alot of Eye candy (on slightly older games...) and surpass the 75-80FPS range, so Vsync there just kills your performance by a few or many FPS.

Is vsync (Capping your FPS to match refresh rate) logical? Yes.
Can it kill performance? Yes.
Will your performance be the same with and without vsync? No, without capping your FPS, you have the ability to surpass the "capped" limit.

Conclusion/Cliff notes: Vertical Sync (Vsync, Capping your FPS to match your refresh rate) is a logical way to increase eye candy, but if you have a powerful video card, you might also be capping your performance, because you cannot achieve higher frames per second than your refresh rate is. Logical? Yes. Useful? Not really...

That kind of made sense.

Conclusion: Even though extra frames are being destroyed when the FPS is uncapped, it's not possible to increase IQ by capping the frame rate (v-sync) and upping the eye-candy.

i may be wrong but to sum it up, i think the blackrino9 means why put high fps out of the videocard if the monitor cant handle it and ends up just "throwing it out"?
