Silly question regarding GF100/Fermi

For people wondering why NVIDIA is looking so much at GPGPU now, look at this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSXhoCCggB8

From 2:40 and onwards, the focus begins to go from 3D to more and more focus on physics ;)

If we are ever going to get photorealistic games that feels like reality...more physics is needed.

and? those are entirely pre-render graphic.... and what does that have anything to do with it?

Let me tell you what bothers me about Nvidia and Fermi. They keep saying Fermi like "fur me." They named the thing after Enrico Fermi but they don't bother to say his name correctly. It's Italian and you say it "fair me." Maddening.
I didnt know how Fermi came about, thx for sharing the info.
Just wiki'd Enrico Fermi, for anyone who's curious, he's one of the first physicist who developed a nuclear reactor.

That's what a GPU does, except a GPU has to do it in real-time. Which means it makes even more sense to build more GPGPU units into it, because it has to do all the physics and positional calculations in real-time.

GPGPU... acting like DirectCompute and OpenCL don't already do that.

uh? how does GPGPU have anything to do with pre-render video?

even it have physics in there, but it still have nothing relate to it... or maybe it is "PhysX" that render within the video ? :p

You are mixing terminology and it makes no sense.

DC/OpenCL is a way of allowing your programme/game to talk to the GPU to do GPU compute, same way as DirectX/OpenGL are a way of a programme talking to a GPU to do graphics.

GPGPU is a generic term for the hardware that does the compute work.

He also worked on the Manhattan Project. One thing he's famous for is estimating the power of the first atomic bomb blast by dropping scraps of paper as the shock wave passed and watching how far they scattered.

Nvidia have started naming their their architectures after famous physicists, Fermi and Tesla so far.

Tesla isn't an architecture, it's a brand. Like how Quadro and GeForce are brands, not architectures.
