I am looking for a new hard drive, and I want something that makes less racket than the 2 I have now. I have a WD 80 8meg cache, and a WD 40 gig 2meg cache for documents and such. These drives are the loudest things in the case. Even my stock AMD skt754 fan makes less noise.

I would like to go sata so any silent sata drive recommendations would be great.
 
As it says in the sticky Buyer's Guide at the top of this forum, the Samsung SpinPoint P80 series drives are the quietest 7200RPM drives still in production. Those of us who can remember the Seagate Barracuda ATA-V remember that it at least rivalled the SP P80 in the noise department.

Rubber grommets, or if you are really serious, foam suspension kits also go a long way towards reducing HD noise. If you get a Samsung though, you won't need them unless the box is less than 3 feet away from your ears or you are hyper-sensitive to HD noise.
 
Thanks. I am just wanting to get away from this high pitched noise they make, just the platters spinning makes alot of racket. They make the same noise if they are just sitting out on a foam pad. Guess I am just sensetive to high pitched noises, but it bugs me to death.
 
Most any drive with Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motors is going to have virtually no idle noise. I thought you were talking about seek noise, and that's why suggestions were intended to address. By far the best way to quiet idle noise is to get a drive with FDB motors - it's almost impossible NOT to nowadays.

WD went to FDB motors fairly recently - the last 160GB and 80GB rebate specials I got were FDB drives, but I still have quite a few Caviars with ceramic bearings. Seagate and Samsung have been on FDB as long as I can remember (The Samsung drives with the Nidec motors are the best) Maxtor and Hitachi have been using exclusively FDB for some time now, WD was the last major maker to switch.

I had almost managed to forget what hard drive motor noise sounded like, until I finally got my SCA Seagate 73GB 1.6" drives running. Six platters :eek: with metal-on-metal bearings. They are on delayed start, so the noise of my server continually ramps up as the SCSI BIOS runs :) This is purely subjective, but I'd estimate them to be over 40dB idle. They are significantly louder than my junk case fans. Makes my box sound like a beast, but I'm glad it's in the basement and I'm in my bedroom upstairs on a SFF.
 
Really, Western Digital finally got smart and got rid of their gawd awful noisey bearing drives? Fudge, I couldn't stand my 80/120 gig models, the noise and whine from those drives was driving me apeshit and I replaced them freaking nice and quiet duel 160gig Barracudas
 
Yeppers, the WD drives with all black cases are FDB drives. The older style cases of black sides and silver top are conventional ceramic bearing drives.
