Silent Boost not so silent

I recently swapped out my Speeze FalconRock for the Thermaltake Silent Boost. Now about 3 minutes after starting up it makes a grinding/buzzing sound that worstens as I tilt to the left and betters to the right. It only lasts for about 5 minutes but it's annoying as hell. Are the fan bearings messed up or something?

it actually comes with their "silent cat" fan (either black or white) with slits in the side of the fan housing...i have the socket a version, and it's definitely not as quiet as they advertise it, but you should not be hearing a grinding/buzzing sound. did you check that your wires/cables are all out of the way? did you buy it new? sounds like it might be a bearing problem...

it is a thermaltake product, you get what you pay for. There not known for quality, or premence...If you looking a for a cheap quite CPU cooling soultion...you cant go wrong with an alpha HS and quite fan.

Quoted for truth.....after owning a few Tt coolers and some other products in the past I can admit that the MAJORITY of their coolers aren't really THAT great...but there are some that stand out from the rest. For other misc stuff I really loved my Hardcano12....that thing was amazing....but I haven't really seen much else that I actually liked.

I kind of don't want to get a whole nother hsf since I already got this and installed it. Should I just get a different fan for it or should I go back to the FalconRock and get a different fan for that? Any suggestions for a good quite fan?

Tt = crap... the only decent products they make are the ones they copied from other companies... Tt is like ricers... all sho no go.

You really need to sit down and look at what you're saying. It is true that their cases are little more then mockups of existing models......but not ALL their stuff is $hit...and that's what you're saying. No offense, but what you're making yourself sound like is little more then an uneducated browser, who has heard his/her fair share of Tt bashing....has maybe owned a cooler or two...and thats about it....and chooses to base his/her overly biased/vague comments on a few select experiences.

Let me tell you, after awhile you figure out how to word things so that you're not making yourself sound like a complete n00b...and after owning a LOT of Tt stuff I can honestly and whole heartedly say that your "statement" that Tt = crap is false.

You're completely entitled to your own opinion, as is everyone else...but if you choose to use that voice to spout false claims and bash companies innacurately then expect something to be said.

just get a different fan...the heatsink itself isn't bad...keeps my processor at about 10c above case temps...as for quiet fans, a vantec stealth might work :)

I use a TT silent boost and its a great HSF. Its not silent, but its quiet then most out there. I think they rated it alittle lower then it is though. I think its about 26-29db for the fan. Far from silent, but like i said its quiet compared to most other fans.

What the thread starter is talking about is a lube problem. Peel the sticker back, drop some greese or 4in1 oil down the little hole and put the sticker back on.

The TT fans on the TT Silent PSU's are incredibly loud as well. They over hype all their products.

While I'm not sure I'm gonna side with the phrase "incredibly loud".....but I will agree on the fact that they typically do overhype their stuff.

3ee Dee, that thing has a 80mm on it right? SVC.com sells alot of fan converters, fairly cheap. (Or your fav, cooling e-tailer... ) Why dont you go with a 80 to 120mm converter..I would have recoumended a 80 to 92 mm but they seem to not have them anymore...

but here is a UV blue 80 to 120mm converter
http://svc.com/fa80120-uvblu.html

Here is a Vantec Stelth fan....(only thing form vantec i like)
http://svc.com/120x25mmvans.html

I personally Use all Souno, there quality is great, the motors haver very little clicking (issue on some larger 120x35mm fans) And i have noticed that they take very well to under volting, Meaning they will run really low specs. My sunbeam fan controller can almost use the fulll range form 0-12v with my 2 120mms (there +100CMF versions though)
http://svc.com/kd1212ptb3-3-86.html
You could easly 7v that bad boy, and never hear it...

BTW: a 120mm fan @ 30Dba is not nearly as bad as a 80mm @ 30Dba....120mms dont "wine" liek 80mm fans do...The lowerpitch makes them seem alot quiter..120s dont bother me @ 30dba, liek 80mm fans do...best i can describe it

PSS: What are you cooling a A64? AXP? P4 of some kind?
hey, here are some Alpha Sinks if you go with a whole new HS. Thease are assome, if you on a Socket A, its only 22 bucks.... I really cant say anything better about Alpha, great quality, simple proven desing, Top notch preformence, (temps down there with the Thermalrights and swiftys...) And there priced jsut right...

I'll second that. I have the K8 silent boost, and while it's not super quiet, it's definatly acceptable, and it does a great job at cooling my winnie. imho Tt gets more crap than they deserve. They're far from the best, but they don't suck nearly as bad as most people say they do.

Great post, Killa Bee. Yes it is an 80mm and it's cooling an AXP 2000+. I think tomorrow I'll try what Tiny said and lube the bearings. If that doesn't work I'll go with a Vantec Stealth and then later on when I get around to upgrading the CPU I'll look into that Alpha you suggested. Thanks.

i have a silent boost and i thought it would be alot quieter then it is, i have put a vantec stealth on it and that made it more quiet but right now i am running that fan at 7 volts and it is acceptable. I even tried the fan at 5 volts but it couldn't keep my CPU (1700+) cool enough

one thing to think about is If you mount a diffrent fan is the screws on the silent boost only has the bottom ears and you will have hard time screwing a fan in that has the top side ears (like most fans) i just used some longer screws that went though both sets of ears

oh gawd... you wanna talk loud? how 'bout the volcano 7... had one of those, great cooling, but man, you crank that sucker up to full go and sounds like a helo in your case... so, if not Tt, what are you guys using? im buildin a 939 system here soon, so lookin for advice whenever I can get it :)

Yate Loon, Panaflo, and the TTsilent boost (mine ain't loud, guess I got lucky *shrugs*)

Anything with TT's orange fans that says Silent is most definitely NOT silent. Its false advertizing at work.
my 80 mm ones are silent and my smart fan 2 is dead silent

FINALLY!!! someone who agrees with what I've been saying since 1999

I own a Silent Boost K8, takes my Winny 2.0 ghz to 2.7 ghz, so I can't complaint ;)

Lubed it this morning with some 3 in 1 and it's still acting up so I just ordered the Vantec Stealth.

I think this statement is spot on with regard to Thermaltake products and the reputation they have on these forums. I've made almost the same argument before during a similar discussion. The fact is that Thermaltake is definitely an above average manufacturer. They have a very wide variety of product styles and innovations. Instead of just making one item that they can push and producing the hell out of it, they have an incredible selection so you can get just what you want. Also I think they do make quality products. They seem to go out of their way to give you more than the bare minimum for what your buying (their fans that they bundle with their heatsinks is just one example). That to me is a defining characteristic of a quality company.

Like all companies they have their good and their bad products, so I'm not endorsing every single thing they've made, or even most of it because I haven't used most of it. Not every product has to be a complete winner. And their marketing strategy is shameless. They take cheasy marketing to an extreme and this is why they receive such a bad rep from people on these forums, however it does not detract from the quality of their products. Many people that read here want to embrace a [H] and DIY attitude, even if they aren't deserving of it, and thus think they need to trash a company that tries to package that attitude with their products and sell it mainstream retail. Yes its cheasy but there is a market for it, so grow up.

I'm not even loyal to the brand however I always look there if I'm shopping for something because I'm likely to see something that I can't get anywhere else.

That argument could be true if it were based on some sort of fact. I've had plenty of TT experiences and let me tell you about them.

I bought myself a TT solid copper P4 cooler long ago and it was unbearable to use it on any but the lowest setting because it was so noisy. It didn't do any better of a job cooling than the stock Intel cooler did either. Recently, I bought two TT Silent Purepower 480W PSU's. People seem to think that these are good on this forum, but that just proves that they've never used a decent PSU before. These are unquestionably the loudest PSU's I've ever used. They are underpowered with weak 12v rails and generate enough heat to warm an average room on a freezing day (NOT EXAGGERATING). This is a perfect example of TT's outright LIES when it advertizes its products.

Lets go on to their overall quality, or lack there of. TT seems to make lightweight cases, well they're actually cheaply made with thin materials that are easily damaged. Case in point, the new TT WaveMaster... I mean Tsunami Dream... Its hard to keep track of TT's names since they RIP OFF other manufacturers at every turn. Let me count the ways. First they rip off the Wave Master and call their rip off of it the Tsunami, as you know means BIG WAVE. The Tsunami dream must be cleaned with a special cloth so as not to damage its delicate painted on mirror finish. Come on, people who buy TT supposedly like LAN parties etc, whos going to say "Don't smudge my Tsunami!! I forgot my microfiber cleaning cloth at home!!!

So they proceed to rip off the CM Stacker next and it looks like crap. They also have a wonderful rip off of a classic CD changer from Bang & Olufsen, which isn't even functional and is a "CD storage system". OOOOh I'm going to "display" my CD ROM's on the front panel of my case... wow, and I'll have to take them out if I want to play them in the drive. Brilliant... Their products seem to put gaudy, non-functional "modded coolness" and plastic gimmicks in front of a well thought out design.

Its not that TT simply exaggerates their products capabilities, it outright lies about them. Silent smart fans and Silent Pure Power PSU's? They're rated for 21dB and so are the Vantec Stealth fans I have, but the TT's are about 3 times the apparent loudness of the Vantec fans. Their Purepower PSU's voltages were unstable and unless you want a small furnace going all the time you'll be wanting a different PSU. Their gimmicky CPU HSF's are underperforming in my experience and none of their products do what they say they do, as well as they claim they will. Its people's choice to be uninformed and not try better manufacturers when TT costs more than most of the good ones. TT should be sued into oblivion for all of the blatant rip offs they commit, however.

Cooling wise: At best the Silent Boost is "average." At worst it's a Thermalright product. ;)

I have a 90mm TT Silent Boost, it claims to be 24dBa, but is DEFINETLY not, I have it running at 7v and it is silent. I wish I had a Vantec Stealth.

Well...I got the Stealth, put it on and I'm still getting the noise. Now I know it's gotta be a case fan or the PSU. ARG! Strange though how it started after I got the Silent Boost. And what I want to know is, if it's a bearing problem why does it go away after a few minutes.

If I wanted some quiteness I'd personally pickup an XP120 + Silenx 120mm @ like 15dB or something crazy low.

After that you'll probably want to replace your case fans too...

:p

ThermalROCK. I wouldn't be surprised if there was an affiliation between the two companies but if they don't carry the same name then they aren't the same. Thus we shouldn't reference Thermalrock's products in a Thermaltake discussion.

My 480w Silent Purepower is about two years old now I believe and is still running strong. It suits me well at the lowest RPM setting and holds my Winchester strong at 2.6ghz, despite whoever thinks 18A is insufficient for the +12 volt line (thats a myth if the power supply is worth its salt).

As far as I know, they are both the same company. Apparently they wanted Thermalrock to have a different brand image...

Precisely. Someone found a link to the Thermal Rock thing on the actual TT server and posted it here. Newegg even lists it as TT.
