Silencing my 9800pro

I recently upgraded my HD from a WD1200JB to a WD740GD. Now the single loudest component in my system is my Gigabyte Radeon 9800pro. Do you guys have any ideas on how I can get it to shut the hell up?

Now before you tell me to get an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer... It won't fit in my system. I doubt that either a Zalman or Thermaltake heatpipe cooler will fit either. I've a Shuttle XPC and I don't feel like taking my dremel to the case.

Portability is important, so watercooling isn't an option either...

Think I would be safe 7-volting the gpu fan? The HSF is already warm to the touch, I don't know how happy it would be with less airflow. How about a Iceberq 4? But I might end up wanting to 7-volt that too. Any generous 9800xt owners out there that aren't using their stock HSF?

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

PS - Yes, the Raptor is faster than the 1200JB by a noticable margin. It's alot quieter too. Smaller though, but I was only using 30 gigs out of 120.

I dont believe in doing the 7 volt mod so I wouldnt do that. What you could do is 5 volt the stock fan and add a zalman fb123 fan bracket - http://www.zalman.co.kr/english/product/fb123.htm . If you use a zalman fanmate on this fan you should get some good airflow with lower noise due to the larger fan size. You could also add a fanmate to your stock fan also. If you do decide to do this though I would keep a close eye on your vid card temps.

good luck

Thanks for the reply bro, but there isn't really space for a 92mm fan anywhere near my vid card. Let alone the associated bracket.

Any reason why you prefer five volts instead of seven? I'm thinking about building a toggle switch that will switch it between 7 and twelve volts.

only reason I dont like the 7 volts is that you are hooking a fan to the +12 and +5 instead of the +12/+5 and ground. I know that alot of people dont have problems doing this but I have heard of other people that did have problems.

As far as this not fitting by your vid card, you do realize that the zalman fan bracket screws into the case pci holders or whatever you call them and sits perpendicular over the vid card, it does not go on the side of the vid card? I have never had a shuttle case so I dont know much about the inside of those, the fan bracket thing was about the only thing I could think of.

Get a Cooljag 313 from Directron, and run the fan at 5V...stock 12V speed is 6000rpm.

Can you guys give me linkage to this "cooljag 313" I'm not finding it at directron.

It's a 1u cpu hsf fan right? How tall is it? I've probably got less than two centimeters between my AGP slot and the side of my case.

Here's a link to Shuttle's page for my system.

If the tolerance is that tight.. you should DEFENITLY think about opening an intake 'blowhole' just above the AGP slot area the size of the fan in the panel. For a slower and quieter fan to work effectively, your going to need to have clean/cool air coming in. If you dont, your just going to be waving around hot air, and your going to toast the card :(

Is there room to attach a nice quiet Panaflow or Vantech to the panel, and then just put on a Zalman heatpipe sink? The Sink only sticks out maybe an inch on one side, and an inch & a half on the other, on either side of the card.

wow, I wasnt even aware that the fan on the 9800 Pro even made any noise.

hummm, then again, mine's a Sapphire card so that could be why.

Heh, then you might have some other components to silence first... Until I switched to an XPC I never noticed how loud my 1200JB was, but once the other system noise dropped it got to the point where it was aggravating. So several months down the road, when I heard that the new Raptors have fluid bearings, I replaced it. Faster and quieter sounds like a good deal to me...

Now its the VGA fan that's starting to annoy me... Then I might get annoyed with the northbridge fan... Then I might need to yank the powersupply... It's a disease I tell you.

LOL!!! It looks like silent PC might be the new obsession to replace OCing... :)
