Silencing a fan?

Hey guys. For a system i'm building I modded out my case for a 92mm fan. I pluged the fan in before i attatched to it to the case and it didn't sound to bad. Today I attatched the fan to the case and pluged it in and now it makes this like whining fan noise that's extremely annoying. I don't know if it's like vibration or what.

Anyone have a few pointers on droping the noise level on a fan? It's a 92mm fan, anyone ever try this stuff? http://www.svc.com/vafanvidakit1.html. Thanks

I'll probably go with water on my next build, and i also have a fan controler. Are there any other ways?

The 92mm fan that i use is the UV ones from SVC

not sure if it's an option for your particular situation but sometimes modding it to use 7v instead of 12 (use the 12v for + and 5v as -, i think yellow is 12 but i honestly forget so make sure first). but like i alluded to, this won't help if you need the full power of the fan

you can use grommits to mount the fan which helps.

you could use the 7 volt trick, or splice a 56 ohm resistor (5 watts) in the +12v line.

Ya i'm pretty sure the extra noise is from case vibration. If i push the fan against the case the noise level drops a bit. I'll go buy a few grommits and give it a whirl.

What are you using to hold the fan to the case side? Screws or the little plastic dealies? In my opinion, the plastic dealies work better, becaue you don't have to destroy a screwdriver putting the screws on. :p

Either way, grommets might help. If not, you can cut the center out of a piece of felt and stick that on the case, so the hole in the case for the screw/plastic thingy lines up with a hole in each felt pad you make. ;) (Put a hole through the felt pad, get one for chairs that's got adhesive on one side. You might have to 'thin'ify your felt pads before this will work, though.)

I'm just using screws. To make matters worse the screws are to small, they don't really hold the fan very well. I'll go felt and grommets and try and find some rubber dealies. The quieter the better.

How big of an airflow hit do you take from that 7v mod. I'm willing to do it, but I don't wanna lose to much airflow. This 92mm is my only intake fan.

There is a much cheaper way to acoustically uncouple fans, ya know... simply take 1/4 inch soft foam, superglue the fan to it, and glue it to the case. MAkes an airtight seal and cuts vibration down to zero. The downside is its a bitch to remove whan changing the case.

That's pretty much what i ended up doing. Bought some plastic screws, some rubber washers, and took some felt. Reeeeally helped with the noise level. Wish i had a camera, would show you guys.

Glad to see you happy with your results. :) I'm having a similar problem, only much increased than yours. I have a SCSI array, 6 (soon to be 9) drives, all spinning, along with some massive fans and 2 PSUs. Basically, I have to make my own case, then put a layer of closed cell foam around it, then make another layer on the case. That's the only way I can cut down on the noise... :(

my computer was madd loud, so i cut pieces of the soft type of mouse pads, u kno the freebie ones with Chase Bank printed on them, so i cut little squares of them and punched a hole thru it for the screw to go thru... this piece of mouse pad goes between the case and fan...

after trying this, i think i lost about have the noise i had before

try this for a cheaper solution
