For any of the Sil3114-based expansion cards, you can use the ports in a non-RAID configuration? (Read: 4 individual, separate drives as opposed to one volume, be it RAID 0,1,5,JBOD)

I'm looking to clean up the inside of my fileserver a bit, moving over to SATA from IDE/133 would definitely help in that regard.

thanks

The Rosewill RC-209 operates in non-RAID mode by default. When I first installed a HD on it I was a bit confused as to why it wasn't showing up in My Computer .. until I remembered you just have to go into Disk Manager and initialize the disk to get it to show up (and then format it).

Get the BIOS files here:

Get the BIOS flashing program here:

http://www.siliconimage.com/docs/UpdFlash_v335.zip

Read the instructions included with the files. The b5314.bin firmware is the one you should load to get the card to run in non-RAID mode. You can use the r5314.bin firmware to change the card back into a RAID card later if you need to run RAID. I have two of the Syba Sil3114 based PCI cards and they work very well in non-RAID mode.

No problems with data corruption or the like? I know that in the past their reliability was not quite wonderful compared to the likes of Promise/Highpoint...That could very possibly be a simple case of PEBCAK as well though. (user error lol)

No data corruption... that I know of. I am using them in my 4TB Windows software RAID 5 box and it never has any trouble rebuilding the array. I have not run the cards with the RAID BIOS, so I can't say how well that works.

For reasons unrelated to the Sil3114 cards, I am planning to upgrade to a real RAID card pretty soon, probably the Highpoint 2340.

I think Sil3114/3112 controllers may have gotten a bad rap in the past because the onboard versions were very susceptible to FSB overclocking. But, who knows?
I've used them and wouldn't have any problem recommending them. YMMV
