significant changes in VMware training courses

I recall that a few of you were on the verge of going to VMware training and hope this is still a timely post.

The VMware Install, Configure, Manage course has been significantly changed from the previous format that basically persisted from 2.5 through 4.1. It's now become a Manage, Configure, and Install course for the lack of a better term. Besides providing you access to VMs on Day 1 and thus giving you what you really want right away all the installation stuff was moved to the last day, so if you already know how to install then you can leave early.

In addition they got rid of all the 2-day courses that were really the bane of those who tried to attend them and justify travel yadda yadda yadda. The new format is that in the Intro ICM course you will actually see a bit less content than in the 4.1 one, but the existing content will be covered more in depth.

The second ICM course will be a 5-day course as well and cover storage, networking, Enterprise+ licensing, and performance monitoring in depth and will largely rely on doing all those things via GUI.

The third ICM course will be focused on administering vSphere via command line and will be 3-4 days long.

PowerCLI and Security will remain their own stand alone courses since they are rather specialized but the length of those courses will be increased by adding more content.

Overall this will allow for more class room discussion as those who took the v4 training know that there really wasn't the time to spend 30 minutes just talking about stuff people wanted to get into. The most common phrase was "We can discuss this offline/after the training."

The Intro ICM for v5 will be offered at the end of August whereas the other two ICM courses will follow later this year.

I was actually fixing to sign up for the Install, Configure, Manage at the local Community College. This course is for vSphere 4 so I don't know if I should wait now or not. I talked to the guy teaching it and he said it would be next spring before they offer it. I still may go ahead and take the one offered now. It's only $125 + the cost of the book. It is 3 hours a night and one night a week for 16 weeks so I am not worried about everything being crammed into a 5 day window.

Take the 4.1 course, get your VCP...then learn the new stuff on your own. Not that big of a deal.

Absolutely! (in rely that those are good changes)

I went to instructor-lead ICM 3.5 and 4.1 and in both I found the interaction with others in the class very valuable but also in both there was a constant "ok, we have to move on" to be heard once the discussions started to take too much time. They really want to allow for students to talk to each other about the lab or even real world examples from their shops back home.

The 1- or 2-day courses they offered before were a real pain in the ass since the ICM was a 5 day course, then you had to stay the weekend at the location to do a 1-day the following Monday if you were lucky, if not then the 1- or 2-day was offered Tuesday-Thursday the week following the ICM.

Don't know anything about pricing just yet but I certainly hope that they will drop the price of the online-based courses somewhat since there are now a lot more courses to complete. Will be hard to justify dropping 3.5k for ICM, then another 3.5k for the Stage2 one, and then another 2.75 for Stage3, and then another 3k total for the other two, once you have taken all the training available for VCP/DCA you organization is out like 13k and that's not including your time and potential travel.

Obviously costs are what they are but hopefully self-paced online delivery will allow for some discounts.

If they are offering it in the Spring of 2012 then it will be the "stage1" ICM for vSphere 5. They may not know that yet but they don't have a choice in the matter. The VMware IT Academy program only allows 4.1 courses to be taught through Fall 2011, all 2012 courses will be v5. I'd sign up for that as soon as the college puts it on the schedule, it's an awesome deal because it does allow you to take the VCP exam after you complete the course and you don't have to pay the 3.5k for it.
