haha, mr bucket, you can be such an ass

let me tell you something...

here is what i did:

1. opened ORIGINAL JPG IMAGE IN PS
2. used rectangular marque (however you spell it) tool and selected the area around the eye/tail
3. saved taht image at level 9.
4. uploaded that image to my server
5. went back to the original file, and resized it so that it was not so big as to be annoying to view
6. saved that image as jpg, level 10.
7. uploaded image to server
8. posted images here, as well as my love for my lens. i dont know if you have ever been able to tell mr bucket, either here or on [M], but i am in general a happy, warm, smiley kinda guy (at least i try to be). for some reason though, i ALWAYS run into you, and you ALWAYS seem to only have negative/condisending things to say to me. whats more, you say these same things to other people. maybe i am being too sensitive, but i dont think so. you are constantly taking things people say/opinions people have and ripping them apart. this isnt really a good example maybe, but i know of many times when people will say "oh yeah, i really like such and such camera" (ie an opinion) and you will say "no, thats wrong, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah". now listen, i am sure you are a very nice, warm, helpful guy in real life, so please, for everybodys sake, why dont you try to bring some of that warmth and tallent into the forums. you have very nice, very very expensive camera equipment. you must be a pro, or at least really love photography. so why dont you start helping people and being supportive of them. help me, the lowly photographer who happens to have a digital rebel and love it, and happens to have opinions that you might not agree with.
9. so thats it. i didnt edit it in anyway other than to resize it and take that crop of the eyes/tail hair. which is amazing in my opinion.
10. oh, and i should probably mention as i dont want to upset mr bucket or have him come down on me with the rath of god for not mentioning this, but i believe i took this with perameter 1 on the DR, which means there wasnt much sharpening done by the camera, only the standard jpg compression.

that is all :)

anyway, i love the lens, and i think this picture is a pretty good example, if not a good example of the lenses macro ability. also worth noting, its not perfectly focused/framed, but you can at least see that the tail hair/eye browish hair is pretty sharp.

<3

oh, here is a macro of sorts... i havnt taken any pictures of anything beautiful yet, so my leg hair will have to work :)

(the whiteness on the hairs is just from the flash, btw)

ATTENTION MR_BUCKET! ALTHOUGH I DID OPEN THESE IMAGES WITH PHOTOSHOP, IT WAS ONLY TO CROP THEM!!!

edit: this was hand held, with a fairly shallow dof, hence a lot of it being out of focus... i was just sitting down taking pictures of random stuff, sorry :)

Ew - leg hair! Heh, I was just thinking as I looked at your post that you should have stopped it down a bit - until I saw your edit. How far from your leg was that?

Out of curiosity, how close were you to the squirrel? The macro lens I've got is a Sigma 50mm, and while it's astonishingly sharp and can take some very close-up photos, it's not always practical to get within two inches of the subject :(.

Regarding the squirrel photo itself, focus and framing aren't the issues; you just didn't have enough depth of field to get the kind of crispness you could have, I think. That's not a big deal, though.

Keep us posted on that lens. It looks pretty nice!

Heh, based on your "leg-hair" pic (and some other owners' comments at Nikonians) I went ahead and ordered the 180mm HSM (and a Hoya 77mm polarizer that I needed) this afternoon. Hopefully, I should have it Monday or Tuesday.

How does the Sigma 180 Macro compare to the Canon 180mm F3.5L Macro? I had the chance to borrow the Canon 180 F3.5L Macro, it was nice and sharp, but I don't do enough macro work to justify shelling out $1200 for a macro lens.

I was looking at the Sigma 105 Macro, or the Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro with the Canon Life Size Converter EF.

imo, i am really really impressed with sigma lenses. the 105 is the first sigma lens i have ever owned myself, but its build quality is fantastic.

As far as its practical use, in general it is a pretty good portrait lens, and is a really nice lens for doing indoor type work (which i do a lot of at concerts, etc). That is of course you dont already have a 70-200 L f/2.8 :)

Anyway, i'll post more pictures tomorow if anybody really is interested, in general though its a great lens.

oh, but i must say (like with the squirrel) it is VERY VERY HARD to stop the lens down enough to get "proper" dof without a flash or tripod at such close ranger... i was probably like 1.5 feet away from the squirrel for instance, and its reallyh really ahrd to get shutter speeds fast enough to stop lens shake AND get deep dof.

anyway, just my excuse :)

Wow, how did you get 1.5 feet from squirrel without scaring it off? Impressive pic :)

Is there a reason why you didn't get Canon's 100mm macro besides price?

also, What is this "bigma" you speak of?

I have a Sigma EX 50mm Macro for my D30 and I love it, but it's a bit too short. So I might sell it and get the 105mm.

i think i can handle those questions :)

first of all, i got 1.5 feet from a squirrel by moving very slow... also, it happened to be a squirrel taht was used to people feeding it (MSU college campus) so it wasnt to nervous around humans.

The reason i didnt get canons 100mm is simply because of hte price. i got the sigma 105 for 200 bucks shipped, in perfect condition. i couldnt have done that with the canon, and to be honest, i cant imagine there being much at all that the canon has that the sigma is lacking, at least for me. oh, except the lens hood that comes with it is a screw on type, not snap on :(. the build quality is amazing, at least it feels that way compared to all of my other lenses.

the "bigma" is a 50-500 sigma lens, http://www.pbase.com/liquidstone/image/28896013 . it looks rediculasly big, and it sort of is... but it has an amazing range (50-500, wow) and is apparently extremly sharp throughout. Anyway, its like 800+ or so dollars, maybe 1000+, i dont really know cause i deffinetly dont have enough money to buy one :).

Thats about it :)

yeah, the working distance is nice, or at least i like it. then again, i have never used the 50 macro (only 50 mm f/1.8 prime, canon) but i would imagine that it might be a bit easier to control lens shake, considering the 50 vs. 105.

That's actually how sharp the lens is.
