Sierra Forest finally has a launch date.

Hypervisor users (ESXi, Hyper-V, Proxmox, etc.) are going to love these things.

Think about it - a lot of servers in production use are still running Haswell-EP, if not older, and people are running homelabs with hardware of that vintage, myself included. These are for light workloads that don't necessarily need cutting-edge single-thread performance that Sapphire/Emerald Rapids would offer, just power efficiency to save on the power and HVAC bills.

Each E-core still has more single-threaded performance than a Skylake core, at a fraction of the power usage. No SMT/Hyper-Threading support, but that just complicates things with assigning virtual CPUs to virtual machines anyway, since each thread is still perceived as an individual CPU/core in the hypervisor for some reason. Here, you can be assured that you're throwing actual full cores at the problem.

Energy-efficient servers are becoming a thing in modern homelabs, so if Sierra Forest gets any traction in the enterprise, we might see a lot of these make their way into homelabs a decade from now, when the CPUs themselves are cheap and easy to acquire.

That’s what I’m lining them up for.
Windows Server Datacenter in an HCI stack.
Give it a pair of 4TB SSD for storage, a single 512GB for the OS, and a 256 as a buffer drive. Grab a Melanox 25GB 2 port card and off to the races.
Will easily handle, Radius, AD, DHCP, DNS, SQL logging services, network monitors, remote administration workstation, etc. with full failover and data redundancy. Grab a Buffalo NAS for an “offline” backup and set it up for quorum logging.

A 64 core setup (maybe 32) would be cool to have for an unRaid setup just to fool around with.
