Hello everyone, I have a Coolermaster Wavemaster case with a Geforce 7800GTX which helps to restrict the flow of cool air from the bottom to the top of the case. I've decided to cut out a hole and install a 120mm fan into the side panel of the case. However, I'm not sure where the best placement would be. If I put it over the cpu heatsink, it would have around 5mm clearance between the 120mm fan and the heatsink fan, and the only airflow would probably be to the cpu. I'd prefer to place it in a position so both the cpu and motherboard could benefit from it, so I was thinking half way over the heatsink and half way over the ram as shown in the picture. Would this be ideal for maximum airflow over the cpu and the motherboard? Cheers :)

p.s. although the cables look as if they are restricting the airflow, they are actually towards the side panel of the case with a large space between the motherboard and the cables.

 
I'd shift the fan slightly to the right and slightly down from where you have it.

And clean up those cables dude, seriously.
 
You can always put the fan on the outside of the case if you don't mind making it a little wider. You could also consider putting several 80mm fans on the side and just 5/7-volt them.
 
Cheers for the reply guys. after exams im going to move cd/dvd drives down and put spare cables above them, its a pain having sleeved power cables they take up much more space and are harder to twist, may just cut them off.

Didn't consider multiple smaller fans, thats actually a good possibility. Either I'll put one 120mm fan where m3ta1head suggested or I'll put one 80mm fan "ontop" of the heatsink and another near the ram. What do you think?

Noooo im currently trying to quiet my psu because of excessive noise, may just stick to a high cfm low noise 120mm fan! So what quiet, high cfm fans would you guys suggest for either 1x120mm or 2x80mm fans? And I mean quiet as in maximum noise around 23-24dB?

It comes with it's own fan controller. At the lowest setting, it's inaudible. You CANNOT hear it whatsoever, and it still pushes a decent amount of cfms. At full speed, it makes quite a racket, but it pushes monsterous amounts of air (115cfm).

What I did when I owned that particular fan was run it at the lowest setting while I wasn't gaming, and then turn it up all the way when playing a game. It didn't bother me since I had headphones on anyway.
 
Hey that fan looks quite impressive! I was thinking of getting the Thermaltake Thunderblade, it apparently pushes out around 74cfm at 22dB...but you cannot always trust Thermaltake ratings. Does the FM121 push out quite a bit of air when its silent? Wish they'd make cfm vs dB graphs when releasing fans!

Not much, maybe 20-30cfm? It's beastly at full speed though.
