    Hi,

I woke up this morning and found that many programs on my Vista pc aren't working coming up with the error message 'side-by-side configuration is incorrect'. It occurs on firefox, internet explorer, windows media player and a game I recently installed Evil Genius. It my be happening on other programs but I haven't across them.

I checked on other forums and they suggest uninstalling AVG (which didn't work) and the Vista website suggested a restore point but whenever I try and do that it gives me an error page briefly and then the computer restarts.

    Help would be much appreciated.

    programs affected include explorer.exe

    ha ha very funny

I've tried that but the answers mighty google gives don't help. uninstalling AVG didn't work, restore points don't work, safe mode doesn't work and reinstalling C++ networkframing doesn't work if the error stops you from uninstalling it.

I came to HardForum as a last resort not a first port of call.

The MSDN site recommends the last 3 things you tried. Have you tried using F8 on boot to get to the boot repair options, then doing the system recovery from there? If that still fails, boot from the installation DVD and use the repair your computer menu option and try system restore again.

At that point if both of those fail you will probably need to save your personal files to another drive and restore your last backup or reinstall Vista. Your SxS manifest is corrupt, along with probably other files.

I've tried but there was a rstrui.exe error so I've decided that it would just be faster to do a full restore of Windows Vista, unless something miracle occurs!

    I don't think I did...

If I had by accident then it might explain my surprise at the errors coming up. I tend not to touch folders I don't understand. The most recent thing I did was install Evil Genius off Steam so when it first started I thought it was because of that :p
