SiCortex has released some interesting machines recently. First, there's the "small" version. 648 cores, up to 864GB of memory. The big one has almost 6000 processors and 8TB of memory :eek: Power draw is about 2 and 20KW respectively, which is amazingly low. About 1 or 6 teraflops of performance to a box.

The best part? These run MPI programs out of the box. All Stanford'd have to do is re-compile smp-fah to deal with a thousand times as many nodes, and you'd be set. :D

Take a look at the "architecture tour" - these things look amazing.

Back on topic....they would also have to redo all the wu's as the number of nodes are hard coded in them
 
oh yes, these guys. El Reg had an article on them earlier this year. Apparently they have some extremely talented engineers, which will never even get close to making 1/1000th of what the YouTube lads made.
 
I got my answer on how much these cost. Three million for the big box, with no hard drives. 70% of that is RAM costs; 8TB of DDR2 costs a pretty penny. I wonder if we could get only 4TB for, say, two million dollars.

Let's see... we could have a bake sale, right?

After we buy one with the proceeds of the bake sale...

we could give it away in a new [H]orde Folding/ UD contest of some kind.

I think we'd be able to pass the default group with one of these boxes running the SMP client.
 
I don't cook, but my brother is like a direct decedent of Betty Crocker. I'll get him baking his ass of pronto! Three million can't be too out of reach. We'll get it for the next [H]Bowl or something :p
 
We should email them and see if they'll put folding on one of their systems for shits and giggles and see how many cores SMP would use of it.
