Just curious of everyones thoughts on them, especially those that own them. I was thinking about buying a pair fairly soon, speakers just are too big when playing in a dorm setting. For the price, how do they compare. Even a ranking of a top 3 headsets would be appreciated

I think everyone knows my opinion on 5.1 headsets. For just games and movies great but you will hate them for music.

The Turtle Beach is probably the best for the $$.

You are better off with real headphones if you want to rock though.

The headsets I want are almost strictly for gaming, maybe movies a little, music... not so much

I have 'em. Used to like it, but not anymore. Sound quality seems to have degraded since I've gotten them. I wouldn't recommend them. If I were you, I'd get the Sennheiser HD485. I heard they're quite good.

If you want excellent stereo sound quality, I recommend the Sennheiser HD series.

If you're buying headphones with FPS gaming in mind, then I can also say that the Medusa 5.1 headset is great, and is also nice to watch movies with.

This review at Techgage sums up my opinions on 5.1 vs stereo pretty well. ;)

I wouldn't. My knackered old Siberias outperform and out-comfort my Sennheiser HD2-somethings a treat. My Siberias were beautiful when I first got them as far as sound goes, especially bass, and they perform just as well one year and one high-speed wall collision later.

If you're after budget, great-sounding headphones, Siberias are excellent. If you're after 5.1, don't get the siberias, and if you want to spend tons, don't get the siberias. Just look beyond the speedlink medusas, i've never seen why they generated any acclaim.

Clarifying: 5.1 are good for games, but medusas are wank. Look for alternatives. Siberias are good if you're looking at them, for games too - and if you have an X-Fi you'll get surround sound anyway. Can't comment on the HD555, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were equal to/better than the icemat stuff.

I just tried my friends icemats (dont know the model, but they were 50 $ at Compussa)

I won't be replacing my HD650, but I found the icemat to be extremley comfortable to wear. The cords were a freakin nightmare, as there is 2 mini plugs, one for the headphones, one for the mic. I only listened to one Billy Idol song, so I dont know how the mic is.

As for the sound, I have no complaints. It sounded nice, considering the price. But it is unfair to compare the HD650, as you could buy 6 pairs of Icemats for their price. Apples and Oranges. So I won't.

ok.. well for the price (preferably under $80, certainly under $100) what headset for gaming, mainly fps would you go with? Siberia just seemed like a great choice for the money( like $50 or $60) although I appreciate any other headsets for a near comparable price you have in mind

They are okay, but not worth 50-60. You can get the HD485 for that price, which is a better headphone.

HD485 ... arent those only headphones? I would like it to be a headset if possible. The mic I currently have is a radioshack one that is a stand alone on the desk with a base and all... 2 AAA's required

I picked up a set from Buy.com when it was $10AR.

Was it worth it? Yes. Would I buy it for MSRP? No.

Just did a quick look on buy.com & the icemats are ~60 dollars it seems, while the HD485's are <100 dollars.

the 555's (i think?) are only like 110 on newegg... how much better/how do they compare to the 485?

i had the icemats- they have great bass, not so great highs, the included mic is a clip on.
the cushions are shallow so your ears will press against the speakers- i found this uncomfortable tho u might not. my clan buddies got these on the 10.00 after rebate thingy a while back and they all like them. they seem to have a quality build to them, thick cords, etc. i sold them because they felt tight
if ur into fps games and need to communicate- use steelsounds- very comfy, great mic, very clear hi notes. not much bass tho. the clear hi end is good for talking and hearing player movements etc. also seems quality build, cloth lines, disassembles. i usually use these when i play with others(which is most of the time)

and i have sennheiser hd525's- sound great-use them if playing single player or if nobody else on teamspeak. have some 5.1 kinyo's- strictly for gaming. good stereo headphones and a good 3d sound card (x-fi or audigy) sound better than 5.1 sets for gaming

I picked up a pair of siberias just to see how they were. Look for my review coming soon on alphagamingonline.com overall they aren't good, and I wouldn't spend more than say $25 on them. if you can get them cheaper than that AR then go for it. otherwise save your pennies and get something better.
