si3114 Recovery

My ABit IC7-MAX3 died. One of the power FETs on the motherboard VRM blew. Fortunately, it didn't seem to take anything with it; the memory, CPU, and video card all seem fine. In fact, after it blew, I was able to start Windows and get the machine connected to the net and start backing-up the files.

Unfortunately, I couldn't finish. The FET gave up the ghost and now the machine won't start; I couldn't finish my backup.

The drives I wanted to save were a couple of SATA drives in RAID 0 hanging off the Si3114 ports. If I go to another motherboard with an Si3114 chip, what are my chances of reading data from these drives? If I get another motherboard without an Si3114 chip and some other SATA RAID solution, what are my chances of recovering the data?

Assuming that the SI 3114 controller on the new board is the same/a compatible firmware version, you should be good to go. Connect the drives to the same ports that they were on the now burnt board, and it should read the metadata on the disks about the stripe set no problem. I wouldn't expect the same effect on a different controller though. Yet another reason why RAID-0 is a bad idea on the desktop.

Thanks. I just realized one of my other machines has a 3114, so I can try it right away.

What is the reason? Do server motherboards not fail? Or is it that RAID-1 or RAID-5 sets would be readily recoverable across chipsets and controllers?

Now that your original controller is unusable, you have to find one just like it to have any hope of getting your data back. And if one of those drives goes south, then all of the data is most likely gone for good.

Sure, I understand that. But this isn't unique to desktop systems.

I moved my two RAID-0 drives from the zorched IC7-MAX3 machine to one of my other rigs, an Asus P5AD2 Premium. This box also has an Si3114R-based SATA RAID controller on the motherboard.

Fortunately, I read all the data with no problem.While I'm waiting for a motherboard to replace the MAX3, I'll probably spend some time looking at backup technologies. That's the real mistake I made.
