Shuttlebox Nightmare!

First off, I'm new here so I'd like to say hello, second, could use some help/input if possible. The problem I'm having is I've been attempting to put a Shuttlebox together, it's powering up but the machine is not posting.

I'm attempting to use the Shuttle SN85G4 with an AMD Athlon FX 3400+, using OCZ Enhanced Latency Series Dual Channel ECC Registered DDR3200, and I've tried two different video cards (nVidia Ti4600 and a ATI Radeon 9800XT) for testing purposes.

I've tried powering the system on with just the vid card and keyboard attached, think thats as minimal as I can get on a shuttle, and machine is still not posting. The board is getting power, HD spins up, fans getpower, led light etc etc, but doesn't go any further than that. I've tested both vid cards, and the memory in my main computer and they work just fine. I've tried the normal stuff like clearing the CMOS with the jumper, checking all other jumper settings, etc etc. The only thing I can think of is that I have a dead processor or a faulty board in the shuttle.

I'm almost sure this is the case but I RMA'd both the processor and the shuttle/mobo, got them back, tried everything again, and came up with the exact same results, machine still not posting. So...I guess what I'm asking is, did I miss anything, something I overlooked, any suggestions? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Cool, I"ll look into trying a differentpower supply, though I'll hafta order one from Shuttle . Memory I did try, tried both sticks in each slot, 1 at a time, 2 at a time, same thing. But I'll definitely look into the power issue. Thanks guys, any other suggestions?

uhm, when i first did my shuttle, i put the shim on backwords, and the heat protector went off and what not, and it just sat there. But it would shut off after a minute. So its prolly not that.

They say reseating the vid card in most cases would help. But I don't know too much about shuttle boxes..

1) Do you mean the FX-51? because you cant put a socket 940 into a socket 752, so i am assuming you are using the Atholon 64 3400+.

2) So in this case, why are you using registered DIMMs. The atholon 64 does not use registered memory. If anything i am willing to bet that its the registered/ECC memory that is casuing the no-post. If not you shocked something.

Yea that was a typo, but its the FX AMD line of cards (well really only 1) that use/require the use of registered DIMMs. The athlon64 family does not.

Hrmmmm, which amd 64-bit chip uses the ECC Registered mem, or do any? Maybe I was just confused and bought the wrong kinda mem....I spose that could be it. But even though it's ECC Registered, it's working fine in my old desktop Abit KG-7 board, of course it's only running at 2100 instead of 3200, but it still works great. I'll keep that in mind though, thx.

Well that answers my question as far as which chip requires ECC registered, heh, thx.

I had pc2100 Corsair Registered/ECC memory running fine for the longest time in my A7v266 mobo. Then all of a sudden i started getting blue screens and such. Checked the manual and it dawned on me that i was using registered memory. I replaced the memory and the problem went away. Just for giggles try a stick of unbuffered DDR mem.

I think I've got an old 512MB stick of Crucial PC2100, might try that when I get home.

Well...if thats the case, what kind of RAM would you prefer? I went OCZ because I heard it was good ram, any suggestions on what brand/model of ram? Was thinking bout running this, what you think about this set?

OCZ Platinum Limited Edition

ive always been a fan of the corsair XMS series ... never worked with OCZ so i cant comment on the quality but corsair has never failed me ...

A tip for those going Athlon64 route when building a computer: no need to spend money on high end registered/ECC memory. Why sacrafice your pc for a memory making that doesnt have very many benefits to the normal power-user and also has higher latencies. Go get yourself some Mushkin lvl2 pc3200 or some corsair XMS.

w00t, thx guys. Turns out it was the memory causing it not to post, I already RMA'd the ECC Registered and ordered me some normal unbuffered memory. Thanks again!
