Shuttle SZ87R6 - Overclocking?

Can the SZ87R6 overclock a i7 4770k? I'm considering one of these SFF systems instead of a traditional mITX build.

The SZ75R5 could so I don't see why not. Shuttle BIOSes can be a bit fickle though. IIRC the R5 needed some updates before it got good at it. Main problem in the beginning was lack of some settings in the original BIOS. Haven't seen anyone around here review the SZ87R6 yet. Also to get really good cooling people used the Asetex hsf instead of the ICE unit.
 
Good to know. Any info on that hsf? Never heard of it...

Hey dude, I'm heavily considering getting the Shuttle SZ87R6 as well; I've been discussing it in my post. I found a website of an IT company where the guy also did reviews of Shuttle units. I found his review for the SZ77R5 (last generation - http://www.motormice.com/reviews/SZ77R5/) which was very thorough and helpful. He discusses the setup, overclock, everything. I ended up emailing the dude with a bunch of questions and he got back to me very promptly. He hasn't tested the SZ87R6, but thinks the Asetek 545LC water cooler that he was able to fit in the R5 should work with the R6; just a thought if you're considering pushing the unit.

I'd love to chat with you directly so we can go about these builds together. 2 minds are better than 1!

Only thing I'm concerned about based on my research is heat. What components have you nailed down for your build?

Yes, that is the difference between the SZ87R6 and SH87R6. The SZ is able to overclock while the SH is not. So buying a K processor and sticking it in a Shuttle SH build would be pointless.

I'm looking to either get this Shuttle or build a miniITX build with a Cooler Master Elite 130. I'm looking to pull the trigger on Friday.

Build List:

Intel I7 4770K
Corsair 2x8GB DDR3 1600
Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD
WD Blue 1TB HDD
XFX R9 270x
Windows 8.1

Those are the major components I'm looking to install. The shuttle is about ~$100-200 more than the miniITX build with the CM Elite 130. I find the shuttle to be an attractive unit that's quite smaller; however, the lack of support of liquid cooling aside from that one mentioned above is a concern. So that's what I'm trying to decide on!

My attraction towards the Shuttle was the size and looks, but more importantly, the ability to use 32GB of RAM. With standard m-ITX builds, 16GB is the max. If you're going to go with the Shuttle, why not max it out at 32GB? You might as well.

Read through my post, there's some good stuff in there, and our situations are pretty much the same.

I'll check out your thread. I'll never need 32GB of memory, so that's why I'm not maxing it out. Don't even need 16GB, but I figured it'd be better for being "future-proof."
 
To cool the shuttle there are some simple mods to do it. 1) Buy the Asetek 545LC. Its proven to be far superior to shuttle's ICE unit. 2) You can put a blow hole and a 120mm fan on top of the case. 3) You can mod some vents on the side so the GPU can get better airflow to it. This mod is a little more involved though. 4) Get a GPU that blows the air out the back and not into the case.

There is a SZ75R5 thread that explains how to do all this. Somebody has already done it. I'm guessing it would work for the SZ87R6 as well. I think all shuttle did was add a newer chipset mobo and left everything else the same in its newer unit.

Normally the R6 would denote that Shuttle has changed case as well, but looking at the specs and pictures, it appears to be an identical chassis with only a slight facelift to the front panel. So I'd agree that any sort of mod that worked on the R5 should also work on the R6.

I've had an SZ77R5 since they were released, and it's been a great little PC. I've been running Shuttles exclusively since the SV25 was released way back almost 12 years ago(!), and they've always been rock solid units with never any skimping on quality. In fact, they seem to just get better with each generation.

Nice benefit to the R5 (and now R6) is that the cases are mITX compatible as well, so you can always upgrade the mobo/CPU down the road. I suppose those of us with SZ77R5 could upgrade to this new FZ87 mobo if we wanted, since the case layout hasn't changed. Just depends on if Shuttle sells the mobo separately, which they tend to do if you contact the directly, though not cheap by any means.
 
I am using an Sz68R5 Chasis witht he 500W PSU.....I bought the case and PSU with no shuttle mobo or ICE cooling unit which was no problem. I was using a CM Elite 120 prior to this- and I was able to sucesfully swap over my Asrock Z77 ITX mobo into shuttle case along other parts. I was also able to rig up the case (some minor cutting and drilling involved) to use my Corsair H80 AIO cooler. Front 120mm Noctua Fan and on the back (pull) I put a 92mm just to increase airflow...In the back I have a Gelid 92mm fan and I cut out the rear fan grill/mesh to increase airflow. My CPU is overclocked so is my GPU and I have no issues- did not make any mods to the case cover. I have two 2.5" HDD's/SSD's right under the H80 in one of those Rosewill Hard Drive Adapter units. Only thing is I had to lose the front USB 3.0 ports as there was no way I could plug int he cable with the H80- still have the USB 2.0 and sound/mic jack.

Was considering the Astek 92mm watercooling unit but didn't feel like paying the $90 for it so I got creative and re-used my H80.

Well I ended up building an ATX build... actually loading Windows 8.1 on it now. Specs in my sig
