Im trying to diagnose hardware problems on a new SS56G with a 2.8 Ghz 800FSB P4 and I was wondering what some of your CPU operating temps where. I noticed 58 C seconds after 1st boot and think this is too high.

Thats way to high. Something is not right with that. Did you take of the plastic protector on the heatsink?

No plastic coating on the copper heatpipe.... Bought all parts from Newegg last week and assembled PC last night... Shuttle SS56G, P4 2.8, Muskin 512MB PC3200, NEC DVD burner, and Maxtor drive...

I build custom PCs at work weekly and this is my second personal Shuttle, other is SN41G2B.

Installed processor with thermal grease and ram, then booted and checked BIOS, both detected and settings ok....
Installed harddrive and optical drive, booted again and checked BIOS, both detected correctly so changed first boot device to Optical drive and then noticed CPU temp of 58 degrees celcius and was a little concered, but I placed Brand new WinXP cd in drive and rebooted....

About 25 seconds into WinXP setup the system hung.... rebooted

Immediately after entering WinXP setup the second time recieved corrupted file error.... rebooted again....

Next I recieved CMOS checksum error at post... (uh oh).... rebooted

Will not post anymore, Fan stays at high speed and does not slow to operating speed.
Reset CMOS... no post, Removed drives and reseated CPU.... no post.

Moved CPU to another computer and it worked fine... CPU from the other working computer did not work in my machine.

No post... nothing.. unfortunately Newegg.com does not warrantly shuttle, so only have factory warranty to fall back on, sent an email to them stating my problem and Im waiting to hear back from them.... Hopefully they will have good customer service.

Does the SS56G not support a Prescott processor?

I never saw that in the specs.... maybe I should have researched a little more? Here is the reply from Shuttle...

"Please change another CPU, the SS56G does not support any Prescott (L2=1M)"

Just wanting some confirmation.. THanks

Nevermind found it at the Eurpoe shuttle site. Only SS56GV2 supports Prescott...
Now I have to find away to recover a dead BIOS. I wouldnt mind doing a hotswap BIOS update from my SN41G2 except that the connector holding the BIOS is my computer is cracked from past tinkering.

ah Prescott. That is correct about support. Only the V2 supports this. I remember reading a thread over at SFFTECH where a guy put is Prescott in the same box only to have the motherboard burn out in about an hour. The VRU's on the board went bye bye. This box is a Northwood only box.
