This is the first time that I'm considering a Shuttle and I had some concerns. Mainly, heat and noise. I don't plan on overclocking any of the components (at least not initially), but the recent review at bit-tech.net leaves me with a few doubts. This system is going to be on my desk only a few feet from my ears and while I don't need anything ultra-quiet I'd like to know approximately how much noise I should be expecting. Here's what I was planning on putting together:

Oh, and one other concern. People have said that some DVD drives don't work too well with the eject button on the case. Is this drive going to be a problem? Any advice is appreciated. :D
 
Shuttles can be quiet machines if you pick the right components. Your first flaw is the 8800GT. We all know that 8800GT is notoriously hot, and with the wimpy stock cooler, you're going to enjoy some extra fan whine/noise. Consider getting a Zalman VF700/900 for the card. The popular AC Acclero S1 won't fit due to the tight space, so Zalman is pretty much your only choice. Since I don't see any PCI cards in your list, I assume you have the extra space to spare. Otherwise, rest of the components looks good.

As for the DVD drive issue, people can be morons. There is a tab in the drive face plate that is suppose to "press" against the eject button. That tab can be easily moved/slide to adjust its location to hit the eject button properly. People have problems, because they either forget about it or just doesn't notice it.
 
Thanks for the advice. If things get too hot and loud I'll look into getting a VGA cooler.
 
Hey my friend is planning on getting a very similar system, with one minor difference, do you know if you could fit an XFI card in that setup?

That's probably not a good idea with an 8800GT. Even if both cards did fit, the sound card would be blocking the fans on the video card and...well...it already runs hot enough.

Aye, That was one of my main concerns.
 
consider an 8800GTS 512MB, I hear the dual-slot cooler is more effective in the shuttle. Change the memory to PK's instead of the PQ's they are almost the same price but the PK's have better timings. PK = performance king, PQ = performance queen.

I get to build my SP35P2 tomorrow, yay!
