Shuttle SN95G5 opinions

I'm looking to build a new Shuttle in the next couple of days, and I was heavily leaning towards a SN95. I was reading here and at Sudhian and people seem to be complaining about a lot of problems, but it all relates to CPU temps??

What exactly are these problems? I keep seeing people complaining but not explaining what it is that is wrong. I won't be overclocking, won't be doing anything crazy, I just want a nice simple, stable system.

Should I steer clear of this model, or are these problems not really that big of a deal? Do these problems affect the use of this model is what I'd really like to know. I don't need to know the temps as much as someone who is overclocking would, so I need opinions now.

If you have this model, please let me know how big these problems really are. If it's just a case of people being picky, or only really affecting certain types of users (i.ei overclockers) then I'd feel a lot better before dropping $300 on this.

Thanks.

Little curious myself since I was leaning toward the SN95G5 as well.

of course there are people that have problems, im yet to have a single one

SN95G5
Athlon 64 90nm 3500+
1GB PC3200 PDP Patriot TCCD
VisionTek X800XT
Audigy 2 ZS
NEC ND-2510
80GB Western Digital 7200RPM

That was a thought of mine as well... it's not in people's nature to say everything is ok, but they sure are quick to complain about what's wrong (myself included).

I have a SN45G currently and had seen some problems mentioned with it as well, and I've never had a problem at all.

I think I'll just try my luck and order it... it's a sweet looking box, and I've been wanting to play with an A64 for a while now.

one other question TheGeneral... did you use onboard sound at all? Is it adequate or do you really need a new soundcard. I was ok with teh onboard on my SN45G but am thinking of getting a good soundcard now.

it really is a great system, if you havent ordered it yet, take a look into these guys, i got mine from them, took about 3 days to get it, and you get 1 free item for every $50 you spend with em, cheaper than newegg too

people weren't being picky they were being asses about it. no sympathy here. the temp issue is seen as a non issue to many sn95 users! I've had mine for 5 months now and is the best gaming system I've put together. this bad boy benchez up there with the best of them!! steer into this not away. naysayers can blow!

my .02

Keep in mind the SN25P (based on the P-chasis used in the SB81P) featuring nForce4 support and PCI-Express will be released any day now - supposedly, it's getting a showing at CES.

As nice as it will be, that requires me to purchase another 6800GT in PCI express and last I looked, the prices were asinine.

I'll be doing one last AGP setup to last me awhile.

hi there, shuttle technical here

the sn95 is a great machine, havent had any back for rmas tbh with u!

I have had an SN95G5 for a couple months and it's rock-solid. I run a 3500+ 90nm, BFG 6800GT, 2x512 Corsair ValueRAM DDR400, and two Raptors. It performs great; I have had only two problems.

1.) The temperature sensor did indeed report the wrong temps at first. However, this was fixed by a BIOS revision over a month ago. Just use the included WinFlash and the newest BIOS file from the web and it'll be fixed in thirty seconds.

2.) I have a BFG 6800GT, which has a black panel on the back to hold the HSF unit securely onto the card. I had to remove a screw from this panel in order to fit my ATi TV Wonder Pro into the PCI slot behind it. Just keep this in mind if you have this card (not sure about other manufacturers' cards) and a thick PCI card (i.e. a TV tuner).

Other than this last problem (currently the BFG card must be bent a tiny bit for it all to fit in there, and it runs a bit warm), I have been thoroughly satisfied with the system and would recommend it to friends.

Oh, while I'm at it I'll tell you that the system itself isn't too loud even on the Mid fan setting (in fact, my 6800GT and hard drives are louder than the main fan). Also, the main fan is almost inaudible on Low, and still keeps your CPU quite cool.

I've also been looking at picking up a SN95G5 System. Here is the setup I was considering:

A64 3500+
Corsair Value Select (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 512MBx2 DDR PC-3200
Western Digital Special Edition 80GB 7200RPM IDE
Lite-On Black 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive
6600GT probably

A few questions for yall about this setup:

1. Is the power supply big enough for that gfx card? Nvidia recommends 300watt minimum.
2. Should I get a single 74gb raptor instead? would it be worth the increase.
3. Do you guys use this set up for your main computer? or just a gaming rig? (just curiosity on this one :) )

Thanks!

power is NO LONGER AN ISSUE!!!

when nVidia says that, theyre stating that for desktop systems, systems with multiple optical drives, multiple hard drives and multiple PCI cards. the PSU in the shuttles are more than sufficent

1. been answered. go to bed rest assured that wee thing in there has a might roar! my 12 rail is solid
2. no huge dif in gaming
3. mine is my main rig but I only game on it. any other computering is a chore : |

After reading the Sudhian forums, it seems that the problems that plague the SN95G5 are:

- external USB devices not working correctly and causing system instability
- xpc being very picky about what ram is used (easily fixed by using what other successful SN95G5 owners are using)
- temperature monitoring problem (fixed through new bios)
- wireless ethernet problems

Did I miss anything?

I haven't heard about the USB devices issue, but I personally use a USB HDD, printer, and thumbdrives with no problems.

Also, I've been using 2x512 MB Corsair ValueRAM (VS512MB400) at 2.5-3-3-7 (rated 2.5-3-3-8).

I use this as my main rig (I'm a CS major at CMU). I game, watch TV (ATi TV Wonder Pro), surf, and code. While an Intel box is admittedly better for your typical non-gaming tasks, multitasking is not noticeably slow.

I have a SN95G5 and running an AMD 3500 at 2.5ghz. I was wondering if i should upgrade to a WD Raptor 74gb. i heard that it runs pretty warm. My case temps are already at 40-45C on full load. Anyone have case temps with a rapter 74gb and overclocked cpu in this shuttle?

for those interested in buying the SN95G5, do NOT skimp on RAM, spend the extra $20-$50 and get RAM that runs at tight timings, i changed from some Kingston running 2.5-3-3-8-2T to PDP Patriot using TCCD chips at 2-2-2-10-1T and got an extra 200+MB of memory bandwith out of it. Ive also never been one for onboard sound, im sure the onboard shuttle is more than sufficent, but ive always felt that dedicated sound cards produced much better quality.
