I recently upgraded my whole computer and decided to go for a SFF which im quite satisfied with.

sn26p
1+1GB ram
3800+ x2
gainward 7800gtx (3500pcx xp)

BUT! as always, the change didnt come without problems, so im hoping to get some answers here :)

1) envy24pt has no mic boost
i widely known "issue", via is lazy, has anyone found a way to get it on?
i even tried to fiddle with windows registry envy keys "micgain_disabled" 01 -> 00 to no avail

2) random bluescreens
from time to time i have random bluescreens pointing at nv4_disp.dll, not actually rocket science to figure this one out but im using the newest forceware and have no idea about this (yes the extra power plug is connected)

3) loss of signal from gfx card
when playing games i sometimes get a "reset" from my gfx card, resulting in my monitor loosing signal, and tvout overlay getting totally garbled (sometimes some loaded textures get totally freaky, ie www page backgrounds in firefox)

4) which drivers to use
the shuttle homepage support system is a pain in the ass to use, but i managed to get thru it without slashing my wrists, just to get an answer written by a german dude. Needless to say i couldnt really decrypt what he was trying to say

What i need to know which nforce dirvers to use (nf4 amd or nf4 amd/intel x16)

5) totally useless upstream from the marvell 1GB nic
i have a linux box handling my firewall and NAT, running p4 3.0ghz HT cpu with 1GB ram and SATA drives

Both say that nic's are in 1Gbit full duplex mode as they should, but when i try to upload stuff to my linux box it chokes REALLY fast to speeds of 100kB/s-10MB/s depending on file size. Small files average at 10MB/s, larger files at 5kB/s - 2MB/s, trying to upload anything larger than 1GB chokes to 0kB/s quite fast. (samba, pro-/glftpd)

Downloading from the linux box works just fine (40MB/s).

and there it is, my sn26p problems so far, any help appreciated
 
I hit similar problems with the NIC on my SN26P, try uninstalling the NIC driver, then reinstalling using the nVidia X16 chipset NIC driver. Though the driver pack is for the X16, the NIC is the same, but this pack's driver is newer. Since you have a dedicated firewall, I assume you are not using nVidia's correct? If you are, uninstall it.

Basically, all I have installed is:

installing what you described only made matters worse, now the speeds are really slow both ways :)
 
just tried ubuntu linux live cd and the network works fine on it, so i came to the conclusion that the windows drivers are crappy, nothing more to it
 
I'm considering purchasing a SN26P any idea as to what fixed it? My machine now is super reliable but it seems like the SN26P is kinda flaky, I always thought Shuttle had a good reputation until reading so many posts about problems with the SN25 and SN26.

I'm not sure why that doesnt work for you. I have an SN26P here, running the latest drivers off the VIA site and it seems to work fine.

Well allthough We are living in Plug and Play times some old school tricks are stillneccecary. Like order wich driver to install frist is still in some combinations very important.

First make shure You have good drivers. It's also important to have current version of drivers, specialy if You use newest hardware.
I get my drivers at www.guru3D.com .

All Shuttle XPC's for AMD with nforce chipset use Marvell gigabit network chip. It ain't that bad chip at all. Though in combination with nforce chipset many people hav problems with it. (SN95G5, SN25P and SN26P)
Nforce forceware (mainboard chipset driver) installs nvidia network driver. Well it's needless to say it ain't good driver ofr Marvell network cards. SoYou need to first install nforce driver for mobo and it installs all drivers (nforce shipset , nforce audio, nforce network, nforce USB 2,0 etc.). Nforce driver makes mobo work proper but makes Marvell chip (And some audio chips) preforming poor.
Following step is uninstall network card and audio drivers that are installed by nforce driver.

Now install Marvell driver that You have downloaded from Shuttle page or from shuttle CD.
Then install sound driver. Then install grafic driver. Then install newest version of Direct X if Your system haven't allready done it for You (XP with SP2).

Now Your Marvell network card is going to work as best it can.
Also You will be able to use best out of Your envy24.

Well TCP/IP works with different packets for LAN and for Internet. So if LAN works O.K. and Internet does behaves strange then it's something else going on.

Well PC router as Linux box is superior then stupid little routers. Though routers handle some thigns automaticly so all You need to sett is security and policies.
On other hand in Linux You have to sett everything correctly. One of important nummbers is MTU value (Maximum Transmission Unit) If it's uncorrect it is going to limit Your internet connection and make it slow.

Chepo routers, use mostly very shitty 4 port switch chips that can't handle real LAN network. When You copy GB's data from PC to PC Internet is going to stop even on Pc's that aren't involved with copy proces.
Also if one person is playing like FPS game with tweaked connection settings and other person is playing WoW or Conquier online they are going to flood a router and start loosing connection even wiht 8 Mb connection.
On other hand if You use modem just as modem or modem and router/NAT function and use gigabit switch for LAN function and connect router with switch with cross cable and situation is allready much better.

Chepest solution is to use modem/router You get from provider and connect it to a gigabit switch (like ASUS 8 port switch)

If You have modem without router functions You can use el cheepo router between modem and switch. Only doo not use it like a LAN switch and router at same time.

Or You can use modem as modem only and use Linux PC box for router but then configure it correctly. If You aren't sure how google for it or ask some Linux guru how to doo it.
If configured right You are going to have best posible solution.
I recomend use of a flash HDD, SFF power supply (silent X from Shuttle) and if posible pasive heatsink for CPU. Like older Zalman Flower with very quiet 120 mili will doo. Make a compact box for it and there You go. Pair it with two network cards ( onr gigabit and one 10/100) and 1GB of RAM and there goes Your overkill :)
