Shuttle SK43G problem with large hdds?

I'm setting up a shuttle sk43g barebones system as a little file server, but can't for the life of me get an operating system on it. I'm using a wd 250gb sata drive, and every time I try to install an os (I've tried win2k server sp4 and xp sp2), after the first reboot it gives me "error loading operating system." After some reading it seems this happens when the bios can't manage large hard drive properly, or it could be a problem with the os. I've flashed the latest bios from shuttle's site, also tried just having the drive partition with one 10gb partition for the os and rest unpartitioned, but I still get the error. Any help guys. Thanks.

have you checked the boot order options in the BIOS?
I was having the same error message and when I switched the bios to boot from SCSI it booted to the SATA drive no prob.

good luck

im having the same problem, it is irritating.

mine is with a 250gb drive on a Asus board that does not need drivers installed to run sATA, the boot order is fine, as there is not SCSI option on my board and both sata drives i have show up under "Hard drives".

I am 90% sure this is a software error, and i think im going to have to go to the store and buy a floppy drive just to try it with the raid drivers, but the reason im not sure that will work is that fact that during windows install first time around it notices them and lets me partition and copy files to them, when i used a sATA PCI controller, windows setup didnt even recognize them until i installed the drivers.

I know with my shuttle, when I go into the BIOS settings, the drive that I want to put the OS on must be detected first on the list (which I think for SN25P is SATA slot 2) else it will put your Windows Loader on another drive thus, won't be able to boot into windows. What happened with me is that, even though the boot order was set correctly, but since one of my Maxtors was detected first in the BIOS, it put the windows loader on the Maxtor and installed the OS on the Raptor. So I had to play around with the SATA ports until I got Raptor to show up as the first drive within BIOS and did my install that way and worked.

I think Shuttle's BIOS isn't the best thing in the world so maybe give that a shot and hopefully it will work. Also, on the note of the large hard drive size. If your windows cd doesn't have any type of service pack with it, the drive detection will not exceed 137GB. But, after you install one of the service pack, the registry key is automatically edited and you will get your 250GB.

Just a little clarification of what I meant on the Maxtor and the Raptor. What happened was, after installing the OS and since Shuttle's BIOS makes windows put the boot loader on the first drive on the detection list (not the boot order list), it put it on the Maxtor instead of the Raptor (while the OS did install on the Raptor). And since the boot order was Raptor first, it tried to boot my Raptor, which did have the OS installed but since the boot loader was on the Maxtor, it couldn't. It's sound kinda like a paradox :p
