Hello!

I have never built a sff computer before and for convenience sakes, seeing as how this for my niece, i am going to order it from a vendor.

The problem i have come across with a budget of around $1200 to $1300 is between the system platforms offered: the G2 or the P2.

The key system configuration within the set price range in mind is:
-intel core2 duo 2.13ghz (e6420), 1066mhz, 4mb l2 cache.
-crucial, 2gb (2 x 1gb) pc2 5300 ddr2 667mhz cl5
-bfg tech, geforce 7950 gt oc 512mb gddr3
-seagate, 320gb sataII 300mbs, 7200rpm 16mb

Some ending questions:
1)Would the G2 system be a better overall system in the end? Performance wise? Is it lacking? Will its "dated" motherboard be a handicap?
2)I know the P2 has more room for expansion but i really doubt she'll be throwing a second video card in there for SLI configuration.
3) Is the P2's extra two slots for a future upgrade of 4gbs of ram become a necessity?
4) I worry about the PSU unit on the G2 which is rated at 200watt?

-much obliged, albert.

I can't comment specificly on those models, however, with Shuttle you have to do some research. There are some models that the video card fan faces inward and thus runs much hotter. On other models, the vid card faces outward and gets fresh outside air through vents in the side of the case. Also, you will usually loose PCI expansion capability if the video card is dual slot or it may not work at all unless you hack a hole in the side of the case. Try to find somebody with the same video card and case to ensure fitment and compatibility.

Shuttle power supplies are of very high quality and are notorious for being able to power high end cards with and mutiple hard drives without issue. Again, try to find another user with the same video card and case (power supply) so that you can also ensure compatibility.

As for the extra expansion witht the RAM. The thing to watch here is that it's common to have stability issues when running with 4 sticks of ram. I wouldn't worry about the 4 slots at this point. Two gigs of ram will be good for most power users for a while longer.

Do research on this site; http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/forums/ in the Shuttle section and in the 'other SFF' section where people build there own micro atx systems.

The Shuttle SD32G2 with a stock 250W PSU can run a 7950GT just fine! The chipset is older Intel 945G and limited to 667mhz RAM.

Shuttle SD37P2 comes with a 400W PSU that can easily handle any current high end video card with a double slot cooler including 8800GTX. Chipset is newer Intel 975X and supposedly can work with 800mhz ram but many people have not had any success and had to revert back to 677mhz.

I would recommend for you - a Shuttle SD39P2 which is their newest model and replace that 7950GT with an 8800GTS! (8800GTS 320 for 1280x1024 or 8800GTS 640 for 1680x1050+ resolutions)

My personal rig is an SD32G2 with 4GB ram(2x2048).... I prefer the SD32G2 as I was able to mod it to fit an 8800GTX or 8800GTS with a double slot cooler and also fit a PCI sound card (not possible in the P chasis). I was able to OC my E4400 to 3.0ghz easily and the memory is running at 750mhz
