I'm trying to put together a system. When I try to install Windows XP, I boot from the CD, it loads a bunch of files, then it says "Preparing to start Windows" (this is RIGHT after you boot off the CD) ... then the computer just shuts off.

I've tried different RAM, different Video cards cdroms, HDD's, ... Windows XP, Windows XP MCE 2005, Windows Server 2003 ... Every configuration I've tried has produced the same results -- the computer just shutting off when it tries to "start windows"... I'm pretty much stumped.

Chaintech 7NIL1 mATX board
AthlonXP 1900+ w/ sufficient cooling
256mb PC2100 kingston
ATI Radeon 9700 pro (also tried a geforce2 MX)
Seagate 4gig HDD
250watt Shuttle power supply PC40

When I replace the power supply with an ooold gateway 90watt power supply (from a p2-350mhz) it boots up fine, installs windows fine....

Is my shuttle PSU faulty? Is it giving enough juice? I thought they were supposed to be very powerful/underrated...

Does shuttle have an RMA process?

I don't know if it could be the psu or not, but I've had this problem before and it was due to my disc being really scratched and dirty. You should try using another one if you have one available, or try cleaning the current one if it's scratched.
 
yeah I've tried that, in my post, i wrote that I've tried multiple different operating systems ;) thanks though
 
It’s just possible you got a bad PSU, it happens. If using a different PSU lets you get windows installed, work backwards. See if the shuttle PSU will run another computer. If not RMA the sucker.

What you have in your machine should in no way overload that PSU, I have an older model with the 220 and have it loaded way more then that with no issues.

but it _IS_ possible to run a normal system off of a shuttle PSU, it's not proprietary or anything (except the size) right?
