Long time experienced builder here, needs advice...

I want to build a small computer for my daughter. She does not
play a lot of games. This would mostly be for web surfing and such.
She's into music a lot so that would be factor. Of course we want to keep the cost down. She has about a $500 refund from her tax retun coming back. This does not have to be the badest thing on the block, just a good performer.

I thought a shuttle box like this one might be a good deal since she is straped for space in her bedroom:

I could build either an AMD or Intel version. I really don't care I've done both many times. If you think something else would be better case wise I'm all ears.

What parts would you recommend that work well with this setup ?
(the PCI slot will be taken by a Linksys Wireless card)

Thanks for your input, you guys are the best around thats why i come here !

I have also been researching on these nice looking Shuttle boxes, and here is a setup that you might want to think about.

Shuttle Model SK41G - $175

Barton 2500+ Retail - $90

WD 120GB SE 7200 - $91.50

Lite On 52x CD-RW - $38

As for Ram, it is really up to you. Judging by your system specs, you know how to pick your parts, so yeah. At least 512MB, either a PC2100 or a PC2700, and one more thing nothing over $100. Crucial, Mushkin, Corsair, or Kingston would be nice. I was thinking of 512MB Mushkin PC2700 Level II OEM for $94, lol.

Total should be around $493. This is without tax nor shipping. You can just get a used FX5200 or something to put in the Shuttle later down the line. Or you can get a smaller Hard Drive, like around a 40GB (Hopefully you can find one for cheap on the For Sale Trade or at Compusa, Officemax, BB, and etc. when they have those crazy ass rebates) Can downgrade to some PC2100 Basic Green or Value Ram. In the end, it will leave you with about an extra $50-70 bucks that you can use to purchase a budget Video Card like mentioned above.

Good luck and let us know what the final setup is going to be.

Alex

Stay away from the Shuttle SK41G. It uses a crappy Via chipset. There are many other Shuttles that are much better. If your going AMD, stick to one of the Nforce2 models.

The Via chipset is that bad huh? I was reading reviews and they said that the 41G and the Intel one is pretty good. Hmm. I guess that is why they are selling so cheap.

The SN41G is a good one....it's the Nforce2 version. You gotta watch the whole model number when your looking at a product comparison.

another nod to the SN41G, espeically with her limited need for video and her desire for music.

Nevermind, it does not have onboard video. I vote for SN41G2B because I have heard bad things about those via chipsets in SFF machines.
