Well I'm builidng a very simple system with the Shuttle K45 barebone and have some question. The system comes with a 100 Watt PSU (which I believe the fine people at Shuttle, after extensive testing, thought was enough). The system will be loaded with a simple CPU (1.6 ghz Pentium), and 2Gigs of RAM. I just had one question:

Will this power supply be able to handle one external harddrive and one external dvd-burner?

Thanks in advance!

External drives generally provide their own power via a wall adapter or similar. So, yes.

Just don't try and put any kind of hardcore aftermarket video card in that thing. It will die -- maybe not immediately, but eventually.

Oh I see. Thanks for the speedy response. And what about bus-powered drives (2,5inch externals and usbpowered dvd-burners)?

It doesn't even have a PCI-E slot so that won't be problem :p...

And also a somewhat related question: Do larger internal SATA harddrives use more power (e.g. an 80GB vs a 500GB HD)?

Nah, HDDs generally use about the same amount of power, regardless of size. It might fluctuate 5 watts.

Not sure about the bus powered stuff, but... probably? I've killed a Shuttle PSU before, so I'm not too quick to claim they're bullet-proof, but that machine doesn't sound very demanding to me.

Oh I see. Thanks again. How did you manage to kill that PSU? OC-ing?

It just died. Stock 2.8Ghz P4, single HDD, single optical drive, onboard video. No OC of any kind, though it was on ~24/7 (my parents' computer). I believe it was a 150 watt -- lasted about a year. I replaced it with a 300 watt PSU, some odd form-factor. Can't remember the exact Shuttle model.
