Shuttle cases, noise? AMD/Intel difference?

Hello there,

I was looking at this case SN41G2V3 to migrate my AMD system to. first off does anyone know if it has space for 2 HDD and 1 DVD-Drive ?

My main concern is noise, my pc is on 24/7 and I do a lot of work on it, so i like my piece and quiet.

I've read that the ICE system in shuttles is temperature controlled, are the Intel systems quieter than the AMD ? Since intel tend to run cooler than AMD's ?

Yes, the Sn41 has room for two HDD"s and one optical. However, be sure to get SeaGates or Samsung drives. Not only are they the quietest drives due to the hydro fluid bearings, but they also produce less heat which is something you don't want in a SFF.

In regards to noise, doing just a AMD vs Intel comparison isn't really even a deciding factor of the noise. The CPU itself doesn't create noise, its the noise from the ICE system fan, HDD"s, Northbridge fan, PSU, Video card that produce the noises.

That being said, i've built many AMD and Intel Shuttle systems for clients and neither are comparabily louder or quieter then the other. Shuttle has luckily put much more efficent and quieter fans in their ICE systems to move more airflow at fewer RPM's, thus less noise. My SN41G2V2 I replaced with a panflo fan and its dead silent in comparison to the cheap Sunon's shuttle used to put in. They have since switched to a different brand. The newer Intel models use a higher blade count fan from somewhere im not familiar with but they also are very quiet.

The constant debate of heat production of AMD vs Intel has always been ongoing. At this point, the Athlon 64's, especially the winchester cores run cooler then Intels Prescott models which pump out alot of heat. AMD's Socket thunderbirds, Bartons and Palimino CPU's run very hot however and require a bit more fan ramping up. The newer Socket A cores, the Semprons are much cooler running. Intels Northwood CPU's ran modestly cool

Keep in mind also that the noise will increase for BOTH systems as the tempatures increase within the Shuttle due to the onboard thermal control. The BIOS'es in the Shuttles will allow you to control when and how much the ICE system fan will ramp up depending on the tempature. The Athlon 64 models have Cool and Quiet which reduces the clock speed of the CPU, therbye reducing heat thus running even quieter, Intel's do not have this feature.

Currently I have a 3000XP, and funnily enough I have two samsung 120gb hd's which run very quiet as you say. I also have a kamakazi cpu hsf and a silenX 400W PSU again super quiet.

I was considering swapping my 3000XP + cash for a P4 3.0 however from what your saying the heat difference is minor, and as a result the fan speeds difference will be minor also.

I think you've sold me on the idea of moving to a shuttle.

You can set the case fan that cools the ICE heatsink to several different settings. I forgot the different step up points, but I know around the low 60C's its at full speed. I have a Northwood 2.8C chip in there which at 3Ghz default voltage it idles around 38C so its fairly quiet, (minus the 6800 fan!)

When its getting stressed it usually only slightly speeds up to the first notch (from like 2500 rpms to maybe 2900rpms)

With Prime95 it goes to full speed around 62C.
 
Thats the thing when im watching a movie or leaving it on over night its going to be only doing low intensive tasks. so presumably the cpu usage is going to be low.

I'm hoping to order one from the UK and power it up to see what I think.

Fingers crossed huh. :D
