hi there,

Soon (hopefully) i will have to move to a room close to the university i am attending and since my motherboard died i will need to get a new system

already have a raptor drive, my video card is in the rma process and when i get it back it will be a 9800 pro, i have Windows 2k, i have a sound blaster audigy 2, i have a dvd/cdrw combo, i have floppy disk, i have 512 mb of pc 2700, i have a 17 inch crt monitor
and i was thinking of ordering one of those shuttle barebones and a amd 2500+ cpu (or a intel cpu) + and US robotics 56k external modem,

but my question is in the tittle of this thread

are the shuttle barebones good, i havent bought anything related to shuttle
SHuttle Barebones
thanks
sorry if this is the wrong forum

I have a similar setup as yours - excpet I bought mine about a year ago. I got a SK41G from Newegg and threw a 1700+ Athlon XP in there.

Absolutely love the machine! I was living in the dorms at the time my tower died, and the extra floorspace I got by moving my computer onto my desk was awesome. You won't run into any issues with the 250w (I believe that is what they ship with these days) power supply, people have ran 9800's, SATA drives and more off of them.

If you have 512mb in single stick, I'd suggest doubling it when you order the barebones. When I upgraded to 2700 I got two sticks and things in general are much nicer! If my desk wasn't such a cesspool I'd snap a photo of my dual monitor setup.

hmmm, i might do that, order another 512 mb
i was wondering of a laptop but then again i though i should give these shuttle barebones a try since i only plan on using the pc in the room
thanks for the fast reply

Shuttles are great man...They overclock pretty decent also...

People compare Shuttles of the PC world to Mini of the car world...

watch out for SN45G version2...
they die easily... especially if you adjust vdimm (which is already quite limited). Over at Sudhian, there's a lot of these horror stories going about. Some ppl killed more than 3 of these.

Lucky I got a Rev1 and can adjust without issue. I have my 2500+ @ 3200+ w/ stock voltage running 41C Idle (not bad since I have a quiet panaflo in there slowed down with Speedfan). Haven't pushed it any more since I have bad generic RAM. SN45G is a mixed bad works well for some, not so hot for others; I know I love mine :D Only beef is lack of SATA...

SN41G2's are a bit more limited on the OC due to less available settings in the BIOS. It also doesn't have the Ultra400 chipset so it doesn't go up to 200FSB as easily (though many ppl still get there). Not sure if you can adjust multi's...

I'm not too familiar with the non-nForce2 shuttles available for AMD...

If you're going to go Intel:

SB61G2R - 20th Anniversary Special Edition is pretty nice since you have a mesh sided case with wireless networking kit that doesn't take up your PCI slot.

SB75G2 is pretty good too. 875P chipset. OC's pretty good.

As you can tell, I'm not as familiar with the intel shuttles... didn't have the money to go Intel so didn't do as much reading when buying it :p

One thing I have to say about Shuttles... if you can, replace the fans, the stock Sunon fan is a bit loud (at least for my tastes) and it spins up quite frequently with SmartFan enabled. I replaced with a Panaflo controlled with a little program called Speedfan that keeps my computer really quiet. There is also a new powersupply that just came on the market, a 250w psu that's quieter, cooler, and provides more power than preview PSU's. I need to get one once they become available in Canada... PSU is the noisiest component in my system right now... after replacing the 9600pro fan.

In short:
Shuttles are great man...They overclock pretty decent also...
:D

ha, now i have a dilemma,
no i am thinking of getting this case (which cost 100 bucks at the egg) and getting a normal atx p4 motherboard (Asus, since is the board maker i trust) + 2.4c

i think thats a better idea dont you think

oh here the case i am talking about

Antec Overture

One of my friends owns this case. He has a 9800pro and a P4 2.4 Ghz, which causes the major heat issues inside the case. Just letting you know, it might overheat depending on the components you put in it.

What'd you replace the 9600pro fan with? I thought the Zalman vid card coolers were too big for the Shuttle cases?

I wound up replacing the stock HSF on my 9600pro with an iceberq4 slowed down with speedfan to 2%. There's still some noise, though its pretty negligible. Picking up Vantec Vibration Dampener probably tomorrow when local computer store stocks them (I have a carryover from boxing day(day after christmas) 15% off deal for it :D). No more nylon screws with rubber washers for me. ;)

The ZM50-HP's fit into the shuttle case (or so I'm told) but its egregiously difficult to find those here in Canada. The 50 series cools the 9600's okay since they run fairly cool, but don't use them with higher heat output vid cards. the ZM17 supposedly works pretty good, don't want to use thermal adhesive on my card though...I want the option to take it off later :p
