Shuttle and 3.4ghz processor

I have a SS51G shuttle with a FS51 motherboard. This is about the 8th one we have built and used for photo ordering systems (Phototeller, http://whitechusa.com/ for more info).

The previous chips have been 2.8ghz and I believe 3.2ghz. Question is, we have 2 shuttles that are using the 800mhz FSB and 3.4ghz chip and neither boot, no beeps or anything, no periphials spin up, no monitor power.

Is the 800 mhz FSB backwards compatible with the 533 mhz FSB motherboard?

If it's a prescott, the chances that it's compatable are like 5%.....

I have seen this exact thing happen once before on a shuttle SN95G5.

I pressed the power button couple of times (repeatly) and then it booted up.

Yeah I was freaked out at first that when i press power nothing came up - no beeps, no monitor, no harddisk sound.... no even the bzzz PSU sound. I am guessing that there wasnt enough initial "power" to kick start the system immediately after the system was shut down. But that only happened once and the system has been running perfectly for months now.

I noticed you said "will an 800 mhz chip run on a 533 mhz motherboard?" That's not doable. That pariticular shuttle is made for 400 and 533mhz based chips only. The 800 mhz chips, most common now days, will not operate in that machine.

Now, if you bought any one of these machines that support 800Mhz FSB;

Then you would be able to run the 800Mhz chips as well as the older 533Mhz chips you already have.

So, you can run a 533 chip on an 800 board, but you won't run an 800 chip on a 533 board. Good luck.

a 3.4gig cpu is no go for the ss51G, i know as i got one for mine and it didnt even boot. in the end i ordered another cpu 3.06 533fsb HT , it works fine exept it dont use the HT stuff on the cpu. for the best part of 7 months i have had 3.4gh nw cpu sitting on the shelf only recently got a shuttle 75G2 which takes the 3.4ghz cpu fine
