My room mates computer used to run fine and and night he went to bed woke up and when you start it up it shuts down like 5 secons after you start it....the screen flicks on and then shuts down.....it used to have a detachable hard drive and it would beep and read a low number on the rpm's do yall think that the PSU is fucked? like from a surge or something?

ok ive put his harddrive in a friends computer and it works fine....when its in the broken computer it only reads at 400rpms.....ive also taken a working PSU and put it in the broken computer and that didnt work...and ive also tried putting in working RAM into the broken computer and that didnt work....so ive narrowed it down to the MOBO or the CPU....does this sound accurate or am i over looking something?

Before trying to switch out mobo and CPU, have you tried switching the cable connecting the HDD to the mobo with a new cable (IDE or SATA cable)??

If it isn't the cable, then I would have thought the mobo is probably your most likely culprit.
