Shutdown Day Is Tomorrow

Jesus I had to go without any of my PCs for a month a year and a half ago, thanks to Katrina. It was hell. Anyone that wants to do it voluntarily, be my guest; for laughs, don't go anywhere because you can't get gas, don't flush the toilets because you don't have water, and don't eat anything decent since you don't have electricity to cook it with. Never mind watching TV or using the phone (cellular circuits were down or overloaded). I learned a whole new definition of "thankful", and I have already participated in my share of "Shutdown Days".

I will see you all tomorrow! :D

as much as i love being a tree hugger, tomorrow is a no can do for me. That would severely impact my killing as i and a few friends are having a lan party. So sorry mother nature, you must take all those cycles saved everywhere else and use them at my place.

Im sure my energy bill for tomorrow will be the same as last months. hehe

After dealing with hundreds of users requests for the first quarter of 07 and also loosing my gaming machine when my asus mobo decided to fry, I am throwing in my towel for a free no tech day tomorrow.
The most tech i will play with tomorrow is my car radio.

Really people... if you have a LCD monitor and an efficiant power supply... your computer doesn't really use all that much electricity compared to other things in the house.

In winter.. here is AZ... my electricity bill drops down to $50 a month.. when it gets hot and I have to use the A/C.. it goes up to $150-160 a month... and I am in an apartment.

And everything including the oven, stove, washer, dryer, and water heater are run off of electricity.

How do you run Folding@home if your computer is off for a day, just hope one of your appliances can take the slack while your computer has a day off.

Hmmm shut down 4 dual core SMP folders, 1 dual core GPU/single core folder, and 2 laptops that fold? I don't think Stanford would like that very much. See you tomorrow

wow, lame. Geez I go out to the lake house every weekend during the spring/summer/fall and there are no computers there. Heck we barely even have cable tv (it's only the most basic package with the local channels + like 3 others, as we can't pick anything up living in a valley).

I don't even miss it either. Fishing, Water-skiing, sailing, kayaking, etc, etc. keeps me busy, and a good deck of cards helps out when it rains.

It looks like I'll be involuntarily participating. I have to go home for my Mom's birthday tomorrow and won't be back till Sunday.

This is as stupid as the school telling me I need to shut down my computer when I'm not using it to save them money. After they started charging me an EXTRA energy fee this year. I'm thinking about starting folding on all three desktops just to spite them.

i wont turn off my seeder box :) , but ill be at work all tomorrow so itll be a breeze, and after work ill be at the bar  i got my day planned out without the computer already :D

I'm going on vacation soon, and promise to turn off the machines during my absence. Good enough?

These 'let's all jump up at the same time to shift the Earth's orbit' campaigns amuse me. I can understand wanting to raise peoples' consciousness, but this ranks only slightly higher than 'don't buy gasoline day' on the effectiveness meter.

I'll happily leave the television and satellite reciever off for a week if they like, though.

Well, apparently our building decided it was Shutdown the chilled water day. My blackberry exploded at 6:00.

I fail to see the point in such a thing. Obviously we call all go a day or a life without all kinds of things, and for most of human history we did without most of what we have now. So what? I have no desire to be off the grid. Quite often I am away from all PC's, email, the net, even gaming devices. Doesn't prove much of anything except that we need more technology reaching into every last little nook on the planet! :)

yes please, i want internet access nodes in the middle of national forests, maybe then i'd actually care to go outside.

seriously, humans have become entwined with technology, i see no point into "going back" or whatever, we move forward because technology helps with our shortcomings. meh i'll be here either working on a project or gaming... i remember going to a paintball tourney and having to spend a weekend in a cabin, i went and bought a laptop almost immediately after that.....experience

screw social experiments, heh I see no point in doing this, if the alternative is to stare at a wall or even ugh, watch tv then no thx I'll take my pc's over annoying tv any day

I have homework to do for an online class. But even if I didn't my response would be the same...

Suck it Libs!

J/K. I don't assume this is a liberal thing at all, I just like saying that because in addition to being a hardocp'er I am also a farker and that is just what we do.

I tried, I really did..................but the further away from it, and the longer I went without it........well, its worse than crack.

but yeah, i did no computer for a week when i went on vacation over winter break. all i had was my pda for ebooks, but no wireless at that resort, so no internet or anything.

I shut my PC down when Im at work, isnt that good enough? And its off usually when Im outta town, and if Im outta town I take a break from all technology and relax.

Heh. I shut down my work PC every Friday when I leave.

And I shut down my home PC every night. Which is pretty good considering so many people leave it running.

The Internet Kinda defeats the purpose of Shutdown Day, unless those computers were shut down too. :D

fuck nature..

i want to see a world without trees or grass.. and i want humanoid robots probing me..

technology ROCKS!

Didn't know that this was yesterday. Was there any effect? I shut down all day anyway to reconfig the nest of wires behind my desk so that they are off the floor and much more organized and hidden.
