Shure E3c quick review

Last week my Shure E3c were delivered. I got them for $119.95 from compuplus.com.

First think I noticed was a problem with my Rio Carbon. The earlier Carbon's had a problem with headphones with metal plugs picking up noise from the metal case. One paper washer later, problem solved.

Second thing I noticed was that after several hours my ears hurt. It took me a few days to get used to them. I also don't try to wear them for four hours at a time anymore.

I'm getting the best results with the soft gray flex tips. They don't block out as much outside sound as the clear flex tips or the foamies, but they are far easier to put in and much much more comfortable. My foamies are also different lengths. One of them is a little too long to comfortably put in my ear.

They sound great. I don't know if it's a placebo or not, but at first they didn't seem to have that much bass, so I eq'd them heavily. Then a few days later I was listening to a track, and thought, "Oh hell, listen to that kick."

My current eq settings are about +5 on the deep bass, +0 on the mid bass and the mids, +1 on the mid highs and +2 on the high highs.

Pro's:

Clean accurate sound, just a little strong in the mids
Portable
Warranty

Con's:

Comfort
Foam tips not cut right
Cable is about a foot longer than I like
Probably should have listened to the e2c's first to know if the extra $50 is worth it...

I'm going to stick to my Senns at home, but these will work for exactly what I wanted them for - better sound for my mp3 player.

seeing your a bass nut, the sony ex-71 would have been my reccomendation, then the E2C after that.
 
I wouldn't say that I'm a bass nut, but it definitely has to be there. Accuracy comes first.

These are designed for the isolation purposes, I use them for my drumming. They work a treat. great for the price.
 
I find all of the SHURE E Series to be comfortable. I've used the E1, E2 and E5 (I own them all).

For best comfort, use the yellow foamies; as they also give you the best bass response. They aren't meant for wearing 7 hours at a time, but I've worn them for sometime and have no problems. The clear ones are my favorite, but the grey/black ones don't offer much support once in the ear, so look at that.

That can happen where the foamies are different lengths; but I've amassed a collection of them I find it not that big of a deal and have many pairs that match.

I don't mind the cable. It can come in handy sometimes.
 
I'm partial to my UE5's. The Shure products have never impressed me all that much.
 
I have bothteh E2C and the E3C. BUT I only have experience with the foam tips since the rubber tips dont fit in my ears...any of them.

And withthe E3C I found alightly recessed bass, but still stasifying.

The E2C I found had far more bass, but a little less detail.

The Sony 71 got away with even more bass and having comfortable rubber tips...but their sound quality was the lowest of the three.

price difference is huge though...comparing a $50 pair of sonys to a 100 and 170 pairs of Shures :)

Agreed. I got the E2Cs primarily for isolation (and better sound quality than I had before) and they work quite well for me.

check how your fitting them, not jsut how good the seal is, but how deep.

I use the foams in part for this, is it's a deeper fit, so there is less air volume inside the ear to deal with, resulting in better bass.

For me, I can fit them so far that none of the foam is even visible...on my E3Cs they alsmot go all the way to the cord...I have tiny ear canals, but they go pretty far in :)
