Looking for ideas for my next HDD rack project.

There are a lot of good modders around here to be sure. If you have made any custom HDD racks please share. Thank you :)
 
Wow! 206 views in two days & no responces? I know custom HDD racks are not near as common as fan holes or side windows, but figured at least a couple people here had made one.

OK ... how about I get things started with this steel one I made a couple years ago (being used right now).
Most of the regulars here have probably already seen this.

Hard to tell there, only part touching the drives are the mounting screws. The whole rack mounts on the case floor with 5/16" bolts on top of acoustic foam. Even with that WD Raptor in there I have to get my ear down close to hear the drives at all.



Was thinking about doing something similar except with four drives. And made from aluminum this time. Any opinions?

I've never made one myself, but i have plans to when i pick up some cash to start modding this ooooold gateway i have lying around.

right now my current case is at such a lack of space i cant even have a hard drive rack. my c: drive si just kinda restign snug between the wires in my rat's nest. lol :eek:

My wiring is not all that spactacular either as you can see above. I tend to be the "function before fashion" type. My feeling is after a point it's more to make things pretty than to enhance performance. Yet I can understand why some go to great lengths to make everything look absolutely perfect. Some of the systems I have seen [h]ere are amazing!

An old Gateway could be a cool project. Just completely reworked an old Gateway from 2000 for some friends. New mobo to update to USB2, more powerful PSU, & they now have DVD capability too.

Some of the old corporate boxes can be a great base for a mod project. I have an old HP Pavillion P3 system that I might convert into a media center - someday - lol. And still have my very 1st PC - a P2 Dell Dimension w/400mhz CPU. The case design is awesome. You can break it down to a pile of parts in nothing flat without any tools. Plus it has all the internal EMI shielding panels. Perhaps I should put my efforts into modernizing that instead of making a new HDD rack. Then again I have been running out of HDD space in my current system since I started capturing video. A >Terabyte set up would be sweet. :cool:
 
I went to go take a picture of my rubberband-HD rack on my backup rig, and I noticed that the rubberband had broken:

The rubberbands under the HD are holding up the wc pump. The harddrive WAS suspended between rubberbands, not so much any more.

It doesn't seem to be affecting anything though, so I think I'm just going to leave it. :p
 
I've got a custom rack in my Lian Li PC-7B, but I don't have a camera at the moment. I'll post some pics as soon as I can though. I'm pretty proud of how well it works :D
